Statler puts on a pair of charges to finish off GSC season
By Gary Thomas
Chico, CA - July 31, 2007... If there’s one thing Los Gatos driver Jason Statler is known for it’s passing cars and that’s exactly what the former King of California did as the Golden State Challenge Series season came to a close over the weekend. "The Big Guy" was up on the wheel as he always is and powered his way from the rear of the field both night’s during the GSC Finale weekend at Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway.
The final weekend of Golden State Challenge Series action began on Friday night in Chico and after winning his heat race, Jason started the 30 lap feature from the 18th position. The track started off the night with a decent cushion but near main event time it had lost any kind of a top and Jason had to run the bottom of the track like everyone else. He used his head and drove a smart race to bring home an eighth place finish aboard the DF Rios Construction, Yak Graphics, D & D Roofing No. 00.
A problem with the engine was discovered following Friday’s race and Saturday was in doubt, but after being on the phone for much of the day, Jason was able to get what he needed and the Double Zero machine was ready to hit the speedway for the final night of the Golden State Challenge Series season. Following a runner-up finish in his heat race Jason lined up back in the 17th position for the championship night feature. The track had slicked off in areas and had developed a nice cushion in both ends of the track, which made for some of the best racing all season.
Jason was on the hammer and blasted his way forward with some incredible passes in the Pheasant Run Shopping Center, Kaeding Performance, Stephanie’s Custom Interiors 00. He marched forward throughout the entire race and brought home a fifth place finish at the end to cap off the ‘07 GSC season.
The final season standings show Jason in a tie for fourth in points with Jonathan Allard. Jason tallied one win, eight top five’s, 18 top 10's and five heat race wins this season with the Golden State Challenge Series. Even with dealing with a lot of adversity this year Jason has come back strong and is showing that he can still wheel a sprint car with the best of them.
With the GSC season done, Jason will now look forward to running a variety of events with various organizations. A positive note for the team is that Jason and Mark might have found a permanent rig in Montana. There is a possibility of heading there to pick it up this weekend, but if they don’t look for the Double Zero machine to compete at Placerville this Saturday with the Civil War Series.
