Kerry Madsen – Top Five Run at the Classic Sets up Florida!
(Bill W) February 5, 2014 – A top five run at the Australian Sprintcar Classic in Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia has driver Kerry Madsen and the Keneric Racing #29 team ready for Florida Speedweeks. The team is tentatively planning on starting their 2014 campaign in the States at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala tomorrow night with the All Stars.
The format was modified this year at the Classic. The event at Premier Speedway was converted to a three-night format, splitting 118 cars. Kerry would qualify sixteenth in his preliminary night and run fourth in his first heat. “In qualifying, and through the first heat race, we weren’t great,” he says. “We went back and made some changes that really helped. We were able to go from seventh to second in the second heat race, and the improvement continued in the feature. We were pretty good from then on.”
Starting eighth in the feature that evening, Kerry was credited with seventh after a penalty. “We actually ran third,” he explains. “We ended up getting penalized four spots for passing a lapped car in the infield. I didn’t necessarily agree, but it was the call that was made and we abided by it. We had a really good car.”
With heat points at a premium in the finale, Kerry came through, driving from seventh to third.
That put him eighth overall in points, and gave him a starting spot outside row four for the main event. “We had a really good heat race,” he says. “We were up to fourth in the feature, and I was trying to pass third, but the track was still one-lane. So I kind of gave up a spot to get one back. We ended up fifth, but we were still pretty happy with that.”
The St. Mary’s, New South Wales, Australia native has seen the Sprintcar Classic become one of the premiere sprint car events in the world. “It was a good experience, with really not a lot of problems,” says Kerry. “The competition and number of cars is ridiculous. We started slow and ended strong, so we moved forward. It was hard to make up ground Sunday night, because the track wasn’t conducive to it, unfortunately.”
Now a winter of preparation has the Keneric Racing team heading to Florida for Speedweeks.
“Our plan is to start at Ocala (tomorrow night) unless something unforeseen comes up,” says Kerry. “Obviously, our focus is the World of Outlaws season, so that’s where all of our energy lies. I’m excited to go to work with (new crew chief) Tyler (Swank) and start aiming for some wins.”
