Wednesdays with Wayne – The Wait is Over!

(Bill W) February 5, 2014 – Wayne Johnson and the Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team have escaped the latest winter storm at their Knoxville, Iowa headquarters.  They are in the warm temps of Florida in anticipation of the All Star Circuit of Champions opener tomorrow night at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Florida.  The three-day event will pay $7,000 to the winner of Saturday’s finale and should feature not only the All Stars, but a number of World of Outlaws invaders as well.

The last three months, preparations have been underway for 2014.  “The guys (Conner “Slippy” Nelson and Daryl Turford) have been working really hard in the shop, and we’ve really been focused on getting ready for the season,” says Wayne.  “I’m really excited to be running with the All Stars and focusing on our 410 program again.”

Ocala’s 3/8-mile oval has a unique shape.  Wayne’s experience there was limited to one appearance, but he did take to it well.  Back in 2009, he grabbed the sixth quick time of the night before going from fifth to second in his heat.  “We were able to line ourselves up on the (feature) pole,” he says. “Unfortunately, we had some engine issues before the green fell and we were a start and park that night.”

The All Stars have picked up several teams for the 2014 campaign.  In addition to Wayne, multi-time champ, Chad Kemenah and Hall of Famer Jac Haudenschild headline the handful of teams that will be added to defending champion, Dale Blaney, Tim Shaffer, Danny Holtgraver and others.  Despite the competition, Wayne, who is no stranger to winning big races in Florida, is ready.  “I look forward to the challenge,” he says.  “We always like to see how we stack up against the best, and Florida will let us know where we are in a hurry!”

Wayne’s run at the All Stars title is made possible by his partners, Todd Carlile, Vern Rengen, Miles Hill of Townline Variety, Russell Schwartz with Outlaw Wings and Ray Williams with City Vending.  In addition, Scott Billish with Stone Mountain Access Systems, who partnered with Wayne when he drove the FattFro #14AJ is on board.  “I’m so lucky to have this group of people with me,” says Wayne.  “They are like family to us, and it’s fun to have them around too.”

Product sponsors including Bill with The Oil Medics, Byron with Sebastian Sandblasting & Powdercoating, Jeff with 517 Design, Shawna and Kaleb with XXX Chassis, Bob with Rod End Supply, Dave with Astro Titanium, Mark and Doug with Schoenfeld Headers, Desiree at Simpson, Jeannie at Butlerbuilt, Tom at Xtreme Accu-Tach, Carl with Custom Sprint Car, Brad with Momentum, Charlie with Fisher Racing Engines, Team Achieve and Tim with Canyon Apparel are on board again as well.

Wayne plans to run Volusia Speedway Park next week with the All Stars and World of Outlaws before concluding Florida Speedweeks at East Bay Raceway Park.

Wayne defeated a field of 52 sprinters on February 6, 2008 during Florida Speedweeks at East Bay Raceway Park in Gibsonton, Florida.  He made a pass of Sam Hafertepe Jr. and Danny Lasoski on lap 20 and never looked back to record the $7,000 top prize.  Hafertepe was second, ahead of Lasoski, Craig Dollansky and Donny Schatz.
