Brad Loyet – Fourth in Standings after ASCS Finale!

(Bill W) November 13, 2013 – Brad Loyet and the Vacuworx Global/Miller Truck Lines #o5 team finished up their 2013 campaign at the Cocopah Speedway in Somerton, Arizona last weekend.  A fourth place finish in the finale also landed them fourth place in the final Lucas Oil ASCS National Standings.  The Sunset Hills, Missouri driver already has his sights set on 2014 and an eye on a championship.

Friday’s prelim at Cocopah Speedway saw Brad win his heat from outside of row one.  “We were one-car shy of making the redraw, which was a real bummer,” he says.  “That is the difference between starting in row five and on the front row.  We had a really good car in the heat and I was looking forward to the feature.”

Starting ninth in the feature, Brad would checker 13th.  “Unfortunately, we missed the setup, and we fell back three or four cars and ended up thirteenth,” he says.  “We have up a lot of points to Tony Bruce, and we were only one point ahead of him (fourth in the ASCS standings) going into the last night.  We knew we’d have to hit on something for Saturday.”

The preparation would pay off when Brad went from fourth to second in his heat race on Saturday.  “We definitely hit on something,” he says.  “We should have won the heat.  Jeff (Swindell) was making the wise veteran move of using a lot of the track.  He was protecting his spot, but unfortunately, with only two cars making the redraw on the second night, that left us out.”

The heat finish set the team up to start the $20,000 to win finale outside of row four.  “We had talked about the setup and we had decided that at this point, we had nothing to lose,” says Brad.  “Tony Bruce was starting on the pole, and it looked like we were going to be fifth in points anyway.  We were ready to accept that.  We threw a setup at it, and if it worked we would put it in our notes and remember it next year.  I think we’ll be back there four times next year too.”

The plan worked, and Brad would drive up to a fourth place finish, while Bruce suffered mechanical issues.  “We ended up hitting the setup really well,” he says.  “We were rolling really well.  Unfortunately, we didn’t get a yellow.  If we would have had one, we would have had a shot at a move. I was running the bottom while everyone else on top.  I think if we had a restart, we could have rolled the bottom and took a shot at those guys.”

All in all, it was a good weekend to finish on.  “We ended up fourth in points with Tony having some problems, so it worked out for us,” says Brad.  “We have our equipment in the shop and ready for next year.  I think we’re way ahead of most everyone else.  They say championships are won in the shop.  That’s our goal…to work hard in the shop this winter and win the championship next year.  I’m looking forward to it.”
