Kerry Madsen – Eye on 2014!
(Bill W) November 12, 2013 – With another top ten points’ finish with the World of Outlaws for Kerry Madsen and the Keneric Racing #29 team, it’s time to look ahead at 2014. After last weekend’s World Finals at the Dirt Track in Charlotte, North Carolina, the team is already preparing for next season with new team member, Tyler Swank, who will arrive at headquarters in Knoxville, Iowa next week.
Last weekend’s event in Charlotte started with two sets of time trials for Friday and Saturday racing…held on Thursday. The team partnered with American Racing Custom
Wheels for the weekend. “It was kind of a rough track, which made it kind of ‘around the bottom’ for qualifying,” says Kerry. “The bottom had some roughish moisture. The first round we were tenth quick. The second round we had a mechanical issue, and we only made it one lap, which was 23rd.”
The St. Mary’s, New South Wales, Australia native ran third in his Friday heat. “We were really strong in the heat,” says Kerry. “Another half a lap, and we may have snuck into the Dash. We came up a half lap short.”
Kerry would start 18th in Friday’s preliminary event. “We were running around there and got spun out,” he says. “We ended up 22nd. It was just hard for us to make up any ground.”
A fifth place run in Saturday’s heat sent Kerry to the B. “We finished one spot out of the transfer, but things were much better in the B,” he says. “We went from fifth to second there. We were feeling pretty confident.”
A mechanical issue arose immediately, though the results show a run from 22nd to 16th. “In the very first corner, we broke a jacob’s ladder in a rut,” says Kerry. “We were pretty much just hanging on at that point. We made a little progress, but the car was all jacked up on three wheels without the jacob’s ladder. It was kind of a bummer, because we were looking for a good run there at the end. The track was there to make a run.”
With the 2013 season in the books, the team is already looking ahead to climbing the WoO standings next season and improving on their win total. “We’re working on inventory and towards next year,” says Kerry. “We’ve got Tyler Swank working for us next year, so he’ll be here next week. We’re going to change a few things, so we are excited and so is Tyler. Every year, things get bigger and better. It’s not like we’re starting from scratch. We’ve got a lot of things in place already and we’re excited about it.”
