Wednesdays with Wayne – Short Track Nationals Week Starts Tonight!

(Bill W) October 23, 2013 – Wayne Johnson had the #77x rolling at the Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas last Saturday night.  Unfortunately, a tangle in lapped traffic cost him a second place run.  This week, the slate is clean and it’s time for the Short Track Nationals at the I-30 Speedway near Little Rock, Arkansas.  It’s a race the Knoxville, Iowa driver has conquered in the past and he feels he’s ready.

The Devil’s Bowl Winternationals on Saturday saw Wayne win his heat from row two.  “We got to second right away, and we ran there behind CJ Johnson for about half the race,” he says.  “I started moving around a little bit and found my way by him in the middle of three and four.”

Wayne was lucky enough to draw the pole for the feature, and led early on.  “We were able to lead the first couple of laps,” he says.  “At that point, we had a caution.  (Brian) Brown said he tried something on the restart, and it worked for him.  He was able to get around us.”

It looked like he would ride home to possibly finish second.  “At that point, he was running really well, and we were there behind him,” says Wayne.  “It was laying rubber at the beginning, and then it was really down hard ten laps in.”

That’s when Wayne’s luck changed and he was caught with nowhere to go in lapped traffic, ending his night.  “It was around lap fifteen or sixteen and some lapped cars got together in front of me,” he says.  “I was going to follow Brown by them, but by that time, it was too late.”

A race night has been added to the Short Track Nationals this evening.  Usually a practice night, Wednesday will feature a full program, giving drivers an opportunity to lock themselves into Saturday’s main event if they can win.  “We usually come on this night to practice, so it’s really no different for us…other than it’s a race and we can make some money,” says Wayne.  “We haven’t run down here at all this year.”

The track has changed since Wayne’s last visit.  “They’ve changed the racetrack quite a bit since last year,” he says.  “There’s less banking and they’ve moved the bottom out.  I think it’s kind of a new track for everyone.  Terry Gray was here two weeks ago, and said it looks different from then even.”

The veteran likes his chances of winning another Short Track Nationals.  “We have our racecar going,” says Wayne.  “We’re fast right now.  I think we have as good a shot as anybody.  The thing with the Short Track Nationals is you have to be able to draw well and get those passing points in the heats.”

End of the Year T-shirt Sales

The Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team has a t-shirt sale going on.  They have this year’s Chili Bowl shirt, as well as four different designs from 2013.

The shirts can be purchased at the trailer at the racetrack.  They are two for $20, or $15 each.
