PERRIS AUTO SPEEDWAY HOSTS “GRUDGE SERIES” FINALE AT “360 OVAL NATIONALS” by Lance Jennings
SANTA MARIA, CA – OCTOBER 23, 2013... On Thursday, October 31st, Don Kazarian’s Perris Auto Speedway will host the “360 Oval Nationals.” Opening the prestigious “18th Annual Budweiser Oval Nationals, presented by All Coast Construction,” the third and final round of the “Grudge Series" will feature the USAC West Coast and USAC SouthWest Sprint Cars. Sponsored by Hoosier Tire and the Hose Advantage Store, the event will pay $2,500-to-win and $300-to-start. The spectator gates at the "Southern California Home of Major League Sprint Car Racing" will open at 5:00pm and racing will start at 7:00pm.
The non-point "360 Oval Nationals" will feature a talented roster of drivers from California, Arizona, and the Midwest. The event on Halloween night will also mark the first appearance for both groups at the popular 1/2-mile clay oval. Last year, Hollister’s Ryan Bernal claimed the inaugural "Grudge Series" title at Canyon Speedway Park and over $15,000 was distributed from the point fund. The purse for the “360 Oval Nationals” is listed at the end of this release.
Heading into the “Grudge Series” finale, Shon Deskins of Phoenix, Arizona holds an 11-point advantage over the competition. Driving his #20 Performance Plus / Ellis Race Cars machine, Deskins set a new 1-lap track record and scored fourth in Canyon’s “Brawl for It All” on September 28th. Currently fourth in SouthWest points, the veteran driver has not won a USAC feature, but claimed an unsanctioned victory at Show Low on August 31st. Shon will be looking to claim the mini-series championship with a main event win at Perris.
Buckeye, Arizona’s “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. ranks second in the “Grudge Series.” Piloting the Massey Motorsports’ #50 RSS Industries / Rod End Supply RSS, the five-time Arizona Sprint Car Champion raced to fifth in the “Brawl for It All” after starting eleventh. To date, “Chargin” Charles is second in the SouthWest point chase with six victories in the campaign. At Perris, Davis will have his sights on earning the $2,500 payday and adding the winning trophy to his collection.
Mike Spencer of Temecula, California is third in the mini-series point standings. Racing Mark Priestley’s #7 Roy Miller Freight Lines / Sander Engineering Maxim, the five-time USAC/CRA Champion won Canyon’s “Brawl for It All.” For Spencer, the triumph marked the first USAC SouthWest and West Coast Series victory of his career. In limited West Coast appearances, Mike finished twenty-ninth in points and will be looking to score the “360 Oval Nationals” victory.
Phoenix, Arizona’s R.J. Johnson sits fourth in the “Grudge Series” point standings. Driving Bill Michaels’ #77M Kodiak Products / Beal’s Auto Body Sherman, Johnson was leading the “Brawl For It All” before a broken steering arm bolt resulted in a fifteenth place finish. Currently leading the SouthWest standings, Johnson scored his tenth victory last Saturday at Queen Creek. R.J. also claimed USAC/CRA’s “Copper on Dirt” and will be looking to add the “360 Oval Nationals” to his win list.
After scoring second at Canyon Speedway Park, Colby Copeland of Roseville, California is fifth in the “Grudge Series.” Piloting Ted Williams’ #74 Bandit Racing / Marks Bolts Maxim, Copeland has yet to win a SouthWest feature and currently ranks thirtieth in the championship points. The versatile Northern California driver will be one of the favorites to watch at Perris Auto Speedway.
Among the other drivers expected to be in action are “The Radio Flyer” Bruce St. James, “The Magic Man” Mike Martin, Bryan Clauson, Josh Pelkey, Richard Vander Weerd, Andy Reinbold, Bud Kaeding, Bob Ream Jr., Brody Roa, “Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr., Jace Vander Weerd, Markus Niemela, Jon Stanbrough, and more.
