USAC SOUTHWEST SPRINTS CLASH AT CASA GRANDE THIS SATURDAY
by Lance Jennings

PEORIA, AZ – OCTOBER 8, 2013... This Saturday, October 12th, the USAC SouthWest Sprint Cars will make their fourth and final appearance of the year at Central Arizona Raceway in Casa Grande. Located on the Pinal County Fairgrounds, the event will also showcase Mini Sprints, X-Mods, and AMA Modlites. The Spectator Gates will open at 4pm and Racing at the fast 3/8-mile oval will begin at 7:00pm.

Each of the three previous visits have produced different winners. “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. won the March 23rd feature and Josh Pelkey claimed the June 22nd victory. On September 14th, point leader R.J. Johnson added Casa Grande to his win list. Many talented drivers are expected at Central Arizona Raceway as they look to claim the $1,500 main event and earn valuable championship points.

Heading into Saturday’s action, Phoenix’s R.J. Johnson holds a 51 point advantage over the competition. Driving the Bill Michaels’ owned #77M Kodiak Products / Beal’s Auto Body Sherman, Johnson led the first 21 laps of the September 28th  “The Brawl For It All” before a broken steering arm bolt ended his night. Scoring fifteenth at Canyon, the point leader has nine feature wins, eight Racers Advantage Store Heat Race victories, five Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash wins, two hard charger awards, eighteen top-10 finishes, and 287 feature laps led to his credit. R.J. will be looking to repeat as a Casa Grande winner and continue his championship bid.

“Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. of Buckeye is second in the point standings. Piloting the Massey Motorsports’ #50 RSS Industries / Rod End Supply RSS, Davis raced to fifth at Canyon after starting eleventh. To date, the five-time Arizona Sprint Car Champion has six feature wins, ten Racers Advantage Store Heat Race victories, three Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash wins, two semi-main wins, three hard charger awards, twenty-three top-10 finishes, and 107 feature laps led. At Casa Grande, the veteran driver will have his sights a feature win and cutting into Johnson’s point lead.

Yuma’s “The Magic Man” Mike Martin is third in the championship points. Racing his #16 PPG Pittsburg Paints / Ultimate Offroad Maxim, Martin claimed tenth in Canyon’s “Brawl For It All.” As this writing goes to press, “The Magic Man” has one feature win, one fast time award, seven Racers Advantage Store Heat Race victories, eighteen top-10 finishes, and 24 feature laps led. On Saturday, Mike will be looking to earn the $1,500 payday and add the winner’s trophy to his collection.

Shon Deskins of Phoenix is fourth in the USAC SouthWest point chase. Driving his #20 Performance Plus / Ellis Race Cars Spike, Deskins set a new track record and placed fourth in the Canyon 30-lap main event. The veteran driver has yet to win a USAC SouthWest feature, but has eight Racers Advantage Store Heat Race victories, one semi-main win, one hard charger award, fourteen top-10 finishes, and eight feature laps led on the season. Shon will have his sights on adding Central Arizona Raceway to his win list.

Tucson’s Ronnie Clark sits fifth in the point standings. Piloting the family owned #6 RCM / Ellis Race Cars machine, Clark ran fifteenth in the September 28th main event. The veteran driver has yet to claim a main event win in 2013, but has three Racers Advantage Store Heat Race victories and thirteen top-10 finishes on the season. Ronnie will be looking for a breakthrough feature win this Saturday night.
