MIKE SPENCER WINS “BRAWL FOR IT ALL” AT CANYON SPEEDWAY PARK
by Lance Jennings

PEORIA, AZ – SEPTEMBER 29, 2013... After a broken bolt in the steering arm sidelined R.J. Johnson, Temecula, California’s Mike Spencer led the final 9 laps to claim the “2nd Annual Brawl For It All.” The $2,500 feature win at Canyon Speedway Park was the first USAC SouthWest & West Coast Series triumph for the five-time USAC/CRA Champion. Colby Copeland, Josh Pelkey, Shon Deskins, and “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. followed Spencer to the checkered flags.

Racing Mark Priestley’s #7 Roy Miller Freight Lines / Sander Engineering Maxim, Mike Spencer shadowed Johnson and shook free from Mike Martin and Colby Copeland to remain second. After inheriting the lead, the ninth fast qualifier managed to keep Copeland at bay and score the 30-lap victory. After finishing second in his heat race and winning his first Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash, Mike left Canyon third in the “Grudge Series” point chase.

Colby Copeland of Roseville, California pressured Spencer for the top spot, but had to settle for second. Piloting the Ted Williams owned #74 Bandit Racing / Marks Bolts Maxim, Copeland was second fast in time trials, ran fifth in his heat race, and scored fifth in the dash. Currently fifth in the “Grudge Series,” Colby is 28th in USAC SouthWest competition with one semi-main win, one hard charger award, and five top-10 finishes.

Peoria’s Josh Pelkey raced from twelfth to score third in front of his hometown fans. Driving Robbie & Gaye Allen’s #12 ABC Body Shop / Napa Auto Parts Maxim, Pelkey qualified thirteenth, won the second 8-lap Racer Advantage Store Heat Race, and was not eligible for the dash. The former ASCA Champion ranks ninth in the “Grudge Series” and is sixth in SouthWest points with one Hose Advantage Store Feature win, four Racer Advantage Store Heat Race wins, two Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash wins, one semi-main win, sixteen top-10 finishes, and 77 feature laps led.

Shon Deskins of Phoenix claimed fourth in the “Brawl For It All” after starting eighth. Piloting his #20 Performance Plus / Ellis Race Cars Spike, Deskins was fast qualifier on the night, setting a new track record and one of eight cars ahead of Mike Martin’s old standard. After claiming fifth in his heat race and eighth in the dash, Shon is the new “Grudge Series” point leader and is fourth in the SouthWest standings. To date, the veteran driver has eight Racers Advantage Store Heat Race victories, one semi-main win, one hard charger award, fourteen top-10 finishes, and eight feature laps led in 2013.

Racing the Massey Motorsports’ #50 RSS Industries / Rod End Supply RSS, Buckeye’s “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. scored fifth after starting eleventh. Davis qualified fourteenth overall, won the first 8-lap Racers Advantage Store Heat Race, and missed the dash. Currently second in both the “Grudge Series” and SouthWest points, the five-time state champion has six Hose Advantage Store Feature wins, ten Racers Advantage Store Heat Race victories, three Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash wins, two semi-main wins, three hard charger awards, twenty-three top-10 finishes, and 107 feature laps led.

Brian Hosford of Gilbert earned his second “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a seventh place finish after starting eighteenth. Driving Bernie Weber’s #32B Coffin & Trout Fine Jewelers / Invision Auto Body Maxim, Hosford was nineteenth fast in time trials, seventh in his heat race, and third in the semi-main. Brian sits fifteenth in the “Grudge Series” and ninth in the SouthWest standings with one Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash win and seven top-10 finishes.

Tucson’s Ronnie Clark raced to victory in the night’s third 8-lap Racers Advantage Store Heat Race. Piloting the family owned #6 RCM / Ellis Race Cars entry, Clark qualified eighteenth and scored fourteenth in the “Brawl For It All.” Ronnie is twenty-first in the “Grudge Series” and ranks fifth in SouthWest points with three Racers Advantage Store Heat Race victories and thirteen top-10 finishes on the season.

“The Real Deal” Rick Ziehl of Las Cruces, New Mexico won the night’s 12-lap semi main. Racing the Gary Williams owned #41W EKR Heating & Cooling / Sutton Signs & Graphics Maxim, Ziehl was third quick in time trials, sixth in his heat race, and ran sixth in the feature after starting sixteenth. The multi-time ASCS Champion is twelfth in the “Grudge Series” and twenty-seventh in the SouthWest points with three Hose Advantage Store Feature wins, five Racers Advantage Store Heat Race victories, two Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash wins, six top-10 finishes, and 61 feature laps led.

On Saturday, October 12th, the USAC SouthWest Sprint Car Series will return to action at Casa Grande's Central Arizona Raceway.
