CANYON HOSTS SECOND ROUND OF “GRUDGE SERIES” THIS SATURDAY by Lance Jennings
SANTA MARIA, CA – SEPTEMBER 25, 2013... This Saturday, September 28th, Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Arizona will host the “2nd Annual Brawl For It All.” Paying $2,500-to-win and $300-to-start, the second round of the “Grudge Series" will feature the USAC West Coast and USAC SouthWest Sprint Car Series. Sponsored by Hoosier Tire, Southwest Contractors, and the Hose Advantage Store, the action packed event will also showcase the LoanMart Challenge Cup Sprints, Mini Sprints, and AMA Modlites. The Front Gates will open at 5:00pm, then Time Trials, with Racing scheduled to begin at 7:00pm.
The non-point "Brawl For It All" will feature drivers from Arizona, California, and New Mexico as they tackle the fast 3/8-mile oval. Last season, “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. out-dueled Ryan Bernal to score the popular victory. Bernal claimed the inaugural "Grudge Series" championship and over $15,000 was distributed from the point fund. Promoters Kevin Montgomery and Chris Kearns are looking for more prize money in 2013 and Perris Auto Speedway will host this year’s finale at the prestigious Oval Nationals.
Heading into Saturday's event, Noblesville, Indiana’s Bryan Clauson leads the point chase of the 3-race "Grudge Series.” Piloting Mike Martin's #16B Ultimate Offroad / Naquin Precision Earth Moving Maxim, Clauson scored the Las Vegas “Sin City Showdown” victory on March 7th. Clauson is in a tight point battle with the USAC National Sprints and will miss Saturday’s action to compete at Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
R.J. Johnson of Phoenix, Arizona is second in the “Grudge Series” point standings. Driving the Bill Michaels’ owned #77M Kodiak Products / Beal’s Auto Body Sherman, the USAC SouthWest point leader ran second at the “Sin City Showdown.” On September 14th, Johnson raced from fourteenth at Casa Grande to score his ninth SouthWest victory of the year. R.J. also claimed USAC/CRA’s “Copper On Dirt” and will be looking to add Saturday’s “Brawl For It All” to his win list.
Sitting third in the USAC mini-series is Visalia, California’s Richard Vander Weerd. Racing the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Stone Gate Development Maxim, Richard finished third at Las Vegas after starting ninth. Last Saturday, the 2011 West Coast Champion scored his fifth main event win of the year at Tulare’s “Harry Talbot Memorial.” Currently second in West Coast points, Vander Weerd has a shot to win another crown and could miss the “Brawl For It All.”
“The Bakersfield Bullet” Rusty Carlile is fourth in the “Grudge Series” point chase. Driving his #51 SouthWest Contractors / N.T.S. Incorporated Bullet, the California driver led the first thirteen laps of the “Sin City Showdown” before settling into fourth. The former Cotton Classic Champion has climbed to fifth in West Coast points after finishing sixth in last Saturday’s “Talbot Memorial.” With twelve top-10 finishes to his credit, Rusty has not won a feature in 2013 and may miss Saturday’s action at Canyon.
Shon Deskins of Phoenix, Arizona is fifth in the mini-series point standings. Piloting his #20 Performance Plus / Ellis Race Cars entry, Deskins scored fifth at the Las Vegas “Sin City Showdown.” Currently fourth in SouthWest points, the veteran driver raced to third from twelfth at Casa Grande on September 14th. Shon has not won a USAC feature in 2013, but claimed an unsanctioned victory at Show Low on August 31st. This Saturday, Deskins will be looking to break through with a $2,500 victory at Canyon.
Among the other drivers expected to be in action are 5-time USAC/CRA Champion Mike Spencer, 5-time Arizona Champion “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr., multi-time ASCS Champion “The Real Deal” Rick Ziehl, “The Radio Flyer” Bruce St. James, “The Magic Man” Mike Martin, Colby Copeland, Ronnie Clark, Andy Reinbold, Josh Pelkey, "Bullet" Bob Ream Jr., and many more.
