Wednesdays with Wayne – Fast at I-80!

(Bill W) September 25, 2013 – A pair of podium finishes at the second annual “Midwest Fall Brawl” at I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska highlighted the weekend for the Wayne Johnson Racing #77x team.  The attention turns to the Lucas Oil Speedway this weekend near Wheatland, Missouri. It’s time for the annual Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial Friday and Saturday.

Things started well last Friday at I-80 Speedway when Wayne won his heat.  “We were lucky enough to draw on the front row of the heat,” he says.  “That really was the key for us.  We were really good in that heat and it got us to the redraw.”

Wayne drew the five, putting him inside of row three for the main event.  He would checker a solid third.  “It was actually a really strong third,” he says.  “At one point, I was under (second place) Danny Lasoski for second.  I was way, way too tight.  Other than a couple of years ago when it rained and it was really rough, that was as heavy as I’ve ever seen it there.”

The Knoxville, Iowa driver would start sixth in Saturday’s heat race.  “It was normal I-80,” saysWayne of the track surface at the high-banked 4/10-mile oval.  “We were able to get to third in the heat, and we redrew outside of row one for the feature.”

Wayne would spin his tires in the slick to start the finale.  “They made it tough on me when they came on the radio and told me I had to be right off the pole-sitter’s right rear,” he says.  “I couldn’t go out to the curb, so I was starting in the slick.  It felt like I was penalized for starting on the outside.”

It was time to take a shot at leader Jack Dover.  “It was pretty much about who got the lead early on,” says Wayne.  “I ran him down and slid him, but I couldn’t make it stick.  I went in too hard and jumped the curb.  I really had him another time, and I got screwed up behind (lapped car) Clint Garner.  I couldn’t get it done.”

At that point, the best race of the night was on…the race for second.  “That’s when (Brian) Brown got a run on me,” says Wayne of his struggle in lapped traffic with Garner.  “We went back and forth for a bit and it was a good race.  It started taking rubber at the end so we settled for third.”

Wayne is excited about racing this weekend in honor of a couple of friends.  “We’re looking forward to getting to Wheatland this weekend,” he says.  “We’re thinking about hitting the MOWA show the following weekend at Granite City too.”
