RICK ZIEHL WINS DODGE CITY “FREEDOM TOUR” FINALE by Lance Jennings
DODGE CITY, KS – AUGUST 25, 2013... For the second time in four nights. “The Real Deal” Rick Ziehl of Las Cruces, New Mexico celebrated a “Freedom Tour” win in victory circle. For Rick, the $2,500 USAC SouthWest Sprint Car triumph at Dodge City Raceway Park was his third win of the season. Jordan Weaver, “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr., Michelle Decker, and “The Bull” Ty Mihocko rounded out the top five drivers as the series returns to action on September 7th.
Starting on the pole position for the second night at Dodge City, Ziehl got the jump on Shon Deskins and the led the first fourteen laps. After a restart, Josh Pelkey took advantage of a Ziehl bobble and was running away from the field. Unfortunately, driveline problems halted Pelkey’s quest and Ziehl regained command on lap 26. From there, “The Real Deal” sailed to the checkered flags at Dodge City Raceway Park.
Piloting the Gary Williams owned #41W Diamond Mechanical / Valley Industrial Painting & Powder Coating Maxim, Rick Ziehl ran fifth in his heat race and won his second Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash of the “Freedom Tour.” In limited starts with the USAC SouthWest Sprints, Ziehl is twenty-fifth in points with five heat race victories, five top-10 finishes, and 61 feature laps led in the campaign.
After flipping the previous night and borrowing a tail tank and parts, Woodward, Oklahoma’s Jordan Weaver rebounded to finish second at Dodge City. Starting eighth in the 30-lap main event, Weaver made the most of the night and earned her best run of the “Freedom Tour.” Earlier in the program, the 305 Sprint Car racer scored third in her heat race and eighth in the dash.
Friday night winner, “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. of Buckeye, Arizona ran third in the Dodge City main event. Driving the Massey Motorsports’ #50 RSS Industries / Rod End Supply RSS, the five-time Arizona Champion tied Shon Deskins with his series leading eighth Racers Advantage Store Heat Race win and was fifth in the dash. Davis left the “Freedom Tour” second in points with five main event wins, three Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash wins, two semi-main wins, three hard charger awards, twenty top-10 finishes, and 99 feature laps led.
Guthrie, Oklahoma’s Michelle Decker raced to fourth in the “Freedom Tour” finale. Like Weaver, the driver of the #7 Royal Purple Oil machine had her best run with the USAC SouthWest Sprints after starting sixth. The USAC Western Midget feature winner started the evening by claiming second in her heat race and taking sixth in the dash.
“The Bull” Tye Mihocko of Peoria, Arizona earned his first “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a fifth place run after starting fourteenth. Racing the family owned #5 RSS Industries / Old World Brewery RSS, the rookie contender placed seventh in his heat race and was not eligible for the dash. Currently, Mihocko is twenty-fourth in the standings with two heat race victories, one semi-main win, and three top-10 finishes.
Phoenix, Arizona’s Chris Bonneau raced to victory in the night’s second 8-lap Racers Advantage Store Heat Race. Piloting his #78 Priced Right Auto Sales XXX with Ostrich power, Bonneau claimed seventh in the dash and thirteenth in the feature after an early exit. To date, the veteran driver is seventh in the point chase with three heat race victories, nine top-10 finishes, and 12 feature laps led to his credit.
