DANNY SMITH CLAIMS OPENING “FREEDOM TOUR” VICTORY AT CREEK COUNTY by Lance Jennings
SAPULPA, OK – AUGUST 22, 2013... After leader Kyle Clark flipped on lap fifteen, hometown favorite Danny Smith led the rest of the way to score his first USAC SouthWest Sprint Car victory. For Smith, the opening night “Freedom Tour” win at Creek County Speedway earned $2,500 for his efforts. Josh Pelkey, Jonathan Beason, “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr., and Dustin Morgan rounded out the top five drivers as the series heads to Wichita, Kansas.
Starting tenth in the main event, Sapulpa, Oklahoma’s Danny Smith also earned the night’s “Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors. Piloting the Smith Motorsports’ #5$ Same Day Auto Repair / DSO Engines XXX, Danny steadily made his way forward and was not to be denied on this night. Earlier in the program, the OCRS feature winner ran second in his heat race and made a direct transfer to the main event.
Josh Pelkey of Peoria, Arizona’s claimed second in the 30-lap feature after starting ninth. Driving Ted Williams’ #74 Bandit Racing / Marks Bolts Ellis, the former ASCA Champion placed second in his heat race and was not eligible for the dash. To date, Pelkey is eighth in series points with one feature win, two heat race victories, one Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash win, one semi-main win, twelve top-10 finishes, and 35 feature laps led to his credit.
Broken Arrow, Oklahoma’s Jonathan Beason scored third at Creek County Speedway from the eighth starting spot. Making his first USAC SouthWest start, Beason raced his #36 machine to victory in the night’s third 10-lap Racers Advantage Store Heat Race and claimed eighth in the dash.
After racing hard with Beason for many laps, “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. of Buckeye, Arizona ran fourth in the “Freedom Tour” opener. Piloting the Massey Motorsports’ #50 RSS Industries / Rod End Supply RSS, the five-time Arizona Champion scored third in his heat race and was fourth in the dash. To date, “Chargin” Charles is second in points with four feature wins, six heat race victories, three Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash wins, two semi-main wins, three hard charger awards, seventeen top-10 finishes, and 84 feature laps led on the year.
Owasso, Oklahoma’s Dustin Morgan claimed fifth in the Creek County main event after starting eleventh. Driving the #93 Ark Wrecking / Eaton Industrial Coating entry, the ASCS National driver scored third in his heat race and had a direct transfer to the main event.
Chris Bonneau made the tow from Phoenix, Arizona and won the program’s first 10-lap Racers Advantage Store Heat Race. Racing his #78 Priced Right Auto Sales XXX machine, Bonneau claimed third in the dash and scored seventeenth in the feature. Currently seventh in points, Chris has two heat race victories, seven top-10 finishes, and 12 feature laps led in 2013.
Peoria, Arizona’s “The Bull” Tye Mihocko won the Racers Advantage Store Heat Race #2. Piloting the family owned #5 RSS Industries / Old World Brewery RSS, Mihocko ran sixth in the dash and scored fifteenth in the “Freedom Tour” main event. Currently twenty-fourth in points, the rookie contender has two heat race victories on one top-10 finish in the campaign.
Shon Deskins of Phoenix, Arizona won his series leading eighth Racers Advantage Store Heat Race. Driving his #20 Performance Plus / Ellis Race Cars machine, Deskins claimed eighth in the dash and finished ninth in the main event. To date, the veteran driver is fifth in the standings with one semi-main win, one hard charger award, and ten top-10 finishes.
Sand Springs, Oklahoma’s Kyle Clark was third in his heat race and won the 6-lap Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash. Racing his #9$ getcgnow.com / DSO Engines ART entry, Clark led the first fifteen laps before a flip ended his night. Clark walked away uninjured and scored eighteenth in the main event.
With 30 cars in the pit area, the format required two 12-lap semi-mains. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma’s Joe Wood Jr. won the first “last chance race” ahead of Mike Goodman, “The Real Deal” Rick Ziehl, and Tim Kent. Sapulpa, Oklahoma’s Blake Hahn won the second 12-lap event, earning his main event transfer along with David Dutton, “The Magic Man” Mike Martin, and Tony Everhart. Wood charged to sixth in the main event from thirteenth and Hahn took seventh after starting fourteenth.
The USAC SouthWest Sprint Car “Freedom Tour” continues tonight (August 22nd) at C. Ray Hall's 81 Speedway in Wichita, Kansas. Mod Lites will share the action packed card at the 3/8-mile clay oval as Adult tickets are $15 and Racing is scheduled to begin at 7:30pm.
