How did people like the new 50 Years of Nationals book? I enjoyed it, but one thing I would have liked is more about development of cars over the years.
Could someone explain the Scrambles to me?

The Scrambles were developed in the '90s to help bring in some bigger names to the Friday night racing, which at that time was the "Non-Qualifiers" night. Before the Scrambles were introduced, the top 50 in points were locked into the A, B, and top half of the C on Saturday and everyone else came back to race on Friday to fill in the rest of the lineups. At that time Knoxville also ran the "Mystery Feature" and "Race of States" on Friday, but no one was forced to run those exhibition races. There was never a guarantee that any big name would have to race on Friday. The Scrambles were introduced for the top 10 in points for the A, B, and C (i.e. where the big names were). The lineups were completely inverted, and points were awarded based on your finishing position and how many cars you passed. Those points were then added to the Qualifying Night points, which "scrambled" the original lineups.

Everyone bitched about the Scrambles at first but it seemed like everyone finally got use to it. I actually liked them because of the big names having to run them. I remember one year there was a big tangle in the A-Scramble and tore up a bunch of equipment. Which was the main reason the drivers did not like them. What is this the 4th maybe 5th year without the Scrambles now?

With the race being 50 laps now, What is 1 or 2 more positions going to matter anyway when Schatz can come from what 21st and win it!! Before that I think the furthest back anyone came from the rear to win was Reichert & Kinser from the 14th position.

A) I think the new Friday format is great
B) After reading the book, I'm even more grateful for getting to see Schatz win from 21st. Seems like a lot of the Finals were won from front row
C) After all his close calls, I would still love to see Sammy win once more....I know, dream on...
