CSP HOSTS USAC SOUTHWEST “SUMMER SLAM” THIS SATURDAY by Lance Jennings
PEORIA, AZ – JULY 23, 2013... This Saturday, July 27th, the popular USAC SouthWest Sprint Car Series will battle at their home track for the “2nd Annual Summer Slam.” The action packed card at Kevin Montgomery’s Canyon Speedway Park will also feature Mini Sprints, LoanMart Challenge Cup Sprints, Viper Smart Pure Stocks, and AMA Modlites. The Front Gates will open at 5:00pm with Racing scheduled to begin at 7:00pm.
Heading into Saturday’s “Summer Slam,” Canyon Speedway Park has hosted nine USAC SouthWest Sprint Car races in 2013. Bryan Clauson won three non-point “Winter Challenge” shows and R.J. Johnson leads all drivers with five main event wins. Johnson won four consecutive features in the Valley of the Sun until “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. scored the “Summer Sizzle” victory on June 29th.
After winning at El Paso, Texas and taking second at Las Cruces, New Mexico, R.J. Johnson of Phoenix has an 86-point advantage over the competition. Driving Bill Michaels’ #77M Kodiak Products / Beal’s Auto Body Sherman, Johnson has had a season to remember with eight series wins, plus the USAC/CRA “Copper on Dirt” triumph. To date, the former Arizona Midget Champion has seven heat race victories, four Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash wins, one hard charger award, fifteen top-10 finishes, and 239 feature laps led. On Saturday, R.J. will be looking to add the “Summer Slam” to his win list.
Buckeye’s “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr. is second in the championship standings. Piloting the Massey Motorsports' #50 RSS Industries / Rod End Supply RSS, Davis was second at El Paso and third at Las Cruces. Currently, last year’s “Summer Slam” winner has three feature wins, six heat race victories, three Sunoco Fuels Passing Masters Dash wins, two semi-main wins, three hard charger awards, fifteen top-10 finishes, and 62 feature laps led on the year. “Chargin” Charles will have his sights on another victory at Canyon Speedway Park.
“The Magic Man” Mike Martin of Yuma is third in the point chase. Racing his #16 Ultimate Offroad / Naquin Precision Earth Moving Maxim, Martin claimed fourth at El Paso and sixth at Las Cruces. As this writing goes to press, the USAC National “Hall of Fame Classic” winner has one feature win, one fast time award, five heat race victories, twelve top-10 finishes, and 24 feature laps led in 2013. “The Magic Man” will be in the mix to win Saturday’s “Summer Slam.”
Tucson’s Ronnie Clark has climbed to fourth in the USAC SouthWest standings. Driving the family owned #6 RCM / Ellis Race Cars machine, Clark scored sixth at El Paso and seventh at Las Cruces. To date, the veteran driver has yet to claim a main event in 2013, but has one heat race victory and ten top-10 finishes to his credit. Ronnie will be looking for a breakthrough main event win at CSP.
Shon Deskins of Phoenix sits fifth in the points standings. Piloting his #20 Performance Plus / Ellis Race Cars entry, Deskins placed thirteenth at El Paso and nineteenth at Las Cruces. Like Clark, the veteran driver has yet to win a feature, but has six heat race victories, one semi-main win, one hard charger award, and eight top-10 finishes in the campaign. At Canyon, Shon will have his sights on adding the “Summer Slam” trophy to his collection.
