BUD KAEDING ADDS “HOWARD KAEDING CLASSIC” TO WIN LIST
by Lance Jennings

WATSONVILLE, CA – JULY 15, 2013... Last Friday night, Campbell’s Bud Kaeding grabbed the lead from Dominic Scelzi on lap 22 and stormed to victory at Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway. The $2,000 “Howard Kaeding Classic” victory was Kaeding’s first win of the special event and his first triumph with the USAC Western Classic Racing Series. Scelzi, D.J. Netto, Tony Hunt, and “BK” Brent Kaeding followed the 3-time USAC Silver Crown Champion to the checkered flags.

Piloting Junior Bowman’s #29 Buster & Ziggy Enterprises / Kaeding Performance Maxim, Bud Kaeding started sixth in the feature and earned the night’s Kaeding Performance / Racing Optics "Hard Charger / Best Passing Job.” Bud steadily worked his way forward and when the opportunity presented itself, the veteran driver executed a perfect turn one “slide job” pass to take command. Earlier in the program, Kaeding also earned the Saldana Racing Products / Rod End Supply Fast Time Award and placed second in his heat race.

Dominic Scelzi of Fresno had an impressive outing in his first non-winged sprint car race. Racing Cody Key’s #41 Whipple Super Chargers / Red Rose Transportation Maxim, Scelzi was fifth quick in time trials and claimed third in his heat race. Leading the first 21 laps, Dominic could not hold off Kaeding’s charge and claimed second in the Ocean Speedway main event.

Hanford’s D.J. Netto had a strong night and scored third in the “Howard Kaeding Classic.” Driving the family owned #88N Netto Ag. / Van De Pol Enterprises KPC, Netto qualified second overall and ran third in his heat race. The young driver is gaining valuable experience running both winged and non-wing sprint car events.

Tony Hunt of Lincoln claimed fourth in the Watsonville 30-lap main event. Piloting Mike Phulps’ #56 Metal Works / Red Line Oil Maxim, the defending champion battled hard to stay near the front. Hunt was fourth quick on the night and scored fourth in his 8-lap heat race. Currently third in the standings, Tony has three top-10 finishes in the campaign.

Campbell’s “BK” Brent Kaeding was looking for his second “Howard Kaeding Classic” victory and scored fifth in the main event. Racing his #69 Al’s Roofing Supply / Kaeding Performance Maxim, the Hall of Fame driver qualified third and claimed fourth in his heat race. Kaeding raced hard with the young lions and held third for many laps before taking fifth.

Marty Hawkins of Santa Rosa won the night’s Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1. Driving his #3M Blakely Landscaping / The Toiyabe Group Eagle, Hawkins was eleventh fast in time trials and scored twelfth in the main event after having problems. This year, Marty has been splitting time with USAC’s 410 and 360 sprint car divisions as his schedule allows.

Stockton’s D.J. Johnson raced to victory in the 8-lap DJ Safety Heat Race #2. Piloting the family owned #33 Unique Breeds / Proplant Farm Services Eagle, Johnson qualified eighth fast and claimed eighth in the “Howard Kaeding Classic.” The rookie contender has taken over the point lead with one Saldana Racing Products / Rod End Supply Fast Time Award, one Kaeding Performance / Racing Optics Hard Charger Award, and four top-10 finishes to his credit.

On Friday, August 9th, the USAC Western Classic Racing Series will battle the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series at Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway. Located on the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, the event will also feature 4-Bangers, American Stocks, and BAD Dwarf Cars. Advance tickets are on sale and for more information, visit the track's website at www.oceanspeedway.com or call (831) 662-9466 (WINN).

The USAC Western Classic Racing Series would like to thank Amsoil, Hoosier Tire, BR Motorsports, Competition Suspension Inc., DJ Safety, Extreme Mufflers, Kaeding Performance, Keizer Wheels, King Racing Products, Racing Optics, Rod End Supply, Rugged Radios, SBI Fuel Systems, and Saldana Racing Products for their support.
