Brian Brown – King's Royal Weekend Looms!

(Bill W) July 9, 2013 – A solid top ten with the World of Outlaws at Huset's Speedway last Wednesday, and a second and fourth on Twin Features night at Knoxville Raceway Saturday for Brian Brown and the Casey's General Stores/FVP #21 team, sets up a trip to the Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio for this weekend's King's Royal activities. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver had a successful weekend at Eldora last April, and is looking forward to his run at the $50,000 winner's share.

It sounded like Huset's had more fans than they could handle last Wednesday night.

We haven't traveled up to Huset's a whole lot, and there are a lot of great fans up there. What a crowd! Having Tony (Stewart) there, and having the Outlaws there…I think it was the biggest crowd we've seen since Stockton (CA). It was really good for our sport to have that many people. It was unfortunate that it took so long to run in the track. That affected the show those people could have seen. Overall, I hope it was a good night for them and they come back.

It looked like you put yourself in a good position to run up front.

We were last out to qualify, and we were twelfth fast time. We were able to start up front in the heat and win that. We posted the fastest time in the heat races, so going into the Dash we felt we had a good shot at a good run.

You started and finished seventh in the Dash.

At that point in time, it was tough to pass. The track had been so wet, that it was just narrow all night long.

You started in row four of the feature. How did it go?

We were riding in seventh or eighth most of the way. I hit the backstretch wall and knocked my jacob's ladder off. That made us a lot tighter than we wanted to be and we ended up tenth. It wasn't a bad night at all, especially on the short tracks where we've been struggling. To get a top ten there with all those fans…it was a pretty good night.

Saturday, it was Twin Features Night at Knoxville. You were able to qualify well, which was a good start.

Twin Features has always been something we've looked forward to. We've missed it the last couple of years when we were traveling. We started off really well. We were nervous about our late draw, but we were able to get second quick. Garrett (Dollansky) did a good job of going out and getting a good time early and we were almost able to get him.

You were able to get the heat win from outside row three.

Heat races are so important in preparation for the Nationals. We were able to get our car to move around. That's very key there, and that's one of the better cars we've had at Knoxville this year as far as getting it to move around the track.

You started on the pole and shot out to the early lead, but you couldn't shake Justin Henderson.

We were able to get the lead, and I felt pretty decent. I was running about as hard as I thought I needed to go. I felt I could run the bottom or the top. The next thing you know, here comes Justin, and he drives by us. I don't want to say he caught us sleeping, I just think I underestimated how hard I needed to go at that point. It wasn't good enough.

You were able to get back by him and it ended up being a good battle.

We had a red there with seven to go. We made some adjustments on the car and really got going and got the lead back. There was a late yellow, and I really didn't do a good job of positioning myself on the restart. I let (Henderson) get a good run at me, and that was all she wrote. He did a great job in a car he hadn't driven before, and beat us. I wish I had an excuse, but at the end of the day, I should have been on the bottom and got beat.

You started sixteenth in the second feature. That's always a long way to go in twenty laps.

We just didn't get going. I think a few laps in, I was almost last. I kind of fell in, and got my bearings. There were some close calls back in the pack there, but I was able to finally get going. I think with four to go, we lined up sixth. I was able to get to third, getting by Rico (Abreu), but he did a good job of getting back by us.

Overall, it was a solid night.

A second and a fourth was the best average of anyone all night long. Unfortunately, that doesn't get you much. Overall, it was a good night, but we'd have liked to have that first one back.

You have to have confidence heading to the King's Royal this weekend.

It seems every time we go back to Eldora, our notebook gets a little thicker and our confidence grows. We were able to position ourselves in a solid top five when we were there earlier in the year. The second night, we led most of the way and got beat on a late restart. We're really just looking forward to getting there. With the history of the event, and being there as a kid…it's great just to be a part of it.
