HANFORD – Some familiar faces will be back at Kings Speedway on Saturday night.

The Pombo Sargent Classic returns to the 3/8ths-mile dirt track at the Kings Fair grounds for the second straight year, with Civil War Sprint Series cars competing for the crown.

Adding a little extra incentive for drivers is a $3,000 prize for winning the main event.

The race honors two long-time rivals in Central Valley and Northern California racing, Al Pombo and Marshall Sargent. After several years at Tulare’s Thunderbowl, the race was run at Kings Speedway last season, with Bud Kaeding taking the checkered flag.

The Civil War series, billed as one of the top winged 360 sprint car series in the state, returns to Kings Speedway after an absence of several years. It also runs on tracks in Antioch, Marysville, Placerville, Petaluma and Chico.

This is the series’ lone appearance this season at Kings Speedway.

Topping the point standings is Justin Sanders of Prunedale leads the season standings, having three top-five finishes to date while building a 25-point lead on two-time champ Sean Becker of Roseville.

Defending champion Andy Forsberg, who has seven titles to his credit, is third, 27 points out of the lead, while Billy Aton of Benicia is fourth, 41 points out.

Vintage racers will also make an appearance this weekend, as well as the IMCA Sport Modifieds, IMCA Modifieds and mini-stocks.
