USAC WESTERN MIDGETS CLASH WITH BCRA AT PLACERVILLE
by Lance Jennings

SANTA MARIA, CA – MAY 28, 2013... This Saturday, June 1st, the USAC Western Midget Series will invade Alan Handy’s Placerville Speedway for an “open wheel shootout.” Co-sanctioned with the Bay Cities Racing Association (BCRA) Midgets, the action packed showcase will also feature the popular winged California Sprint Car Civil War Series. The Front Gates will open at 5:00pm, Time Trials at 6:30pm, and Racing is set to begin at 7:00pm.

While a fixture on the BCRA Midget schedule, the quarter-mile oval at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds has only hosted one USAC Western Midget event. Held on October 11, 1996, “The Professor” Jimmy Sills claimed the 30-lap main event victory. On Saturday, a talented roster of USAC and BCRA drivers will have their sights on adding a Placerville feature win to their resume.

Heading to Placerville, Ronnie Gardner of Norco leads both the overall and dirt series point standings. Racing the Six8 Motorsports’ #68 Baldozier Racing / Esslinger Engineering Stewart, Gardner scored his second victory of the year on May 18th at Ventura. To date, Ronnie has one heat race victory, five top-10 finishes, and 47 feature laps led to his credit. The former Most Improved Driver with the USAC/CRA Sprint Cars will be one of the favorites to watch on Saturday.

Anaheim’s Jake Swanson is second in both the overall and dirt championship points. Switching from the family’s #05 Honda powered Stealth to Tres Van Dyne’s #5 Van Dyne Engineering / JD Demolition and Grading Edmunds, Swanson ran sixth at Ventura. Currently, Jake has one feature win, three heat race victories, five top-10 finishes, and 43 feature laps led on the season. The 2012 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year will be looking to claim his first main event win for Van Dyne at Placerville.

David Prickett of Fresno has climbed to third in both the overall and dirt series point chase. Piloting the Neverlift Motorsports' #15 Crysalli Water / Mt. Rose Cocktail Mixes Spike, Prickett was fourth in Ventura’s “Battle at the Beach.” To date, the veteran driver has three heat race victories, one semi-main win, and five top-10 finishes on the year. David will have his sights on winning his first main event of the campaign.

After running second at Ventura, Norco’s Cody Swanson is fourth in both the dirt and overall standings. Driving the family owned #71 Edmunds Auto Research / K&N Filters entry, Swanson won the March 30th race at Bakersfield. In addition, the VRA Midget Champion has one heat race victory, three top-10 finishes, and 31 feature laps led to his credit. Cody will be looking for his second career main event win this Saturday night.

Frankie Guerrini of San Rafael has climbed to fifth in the overall points and fourteenth in the dirt series. Racing the family owned #63 F&F Racing / K&N Engineering Stealth, Guerrini scored third at Ventura on May 18th. As this writing goes to press, Frankie has four top-10 finishes in the campaign and will be looking to claim victory at Placerville.

Kingsburg’s Kody Swanson is tied for fifth in the overall points and sits eighth in the dirt series. Piloting the Neverlift Motorsports' #55 Crysalli Water / Mt. Rose Cocktail Mixes Spike, Swanson did not race at Ventura’s “Battle at the Beach.” To date, the 2005 USAC Western Sprint Car Champion has one feature win, three top-10 finishes, and 41 feature laps led on the year. Kody will have his sights on adding Saturday’s 30-lap main event to his win list.

Among the other drivers expected to be in action are Scott Pierovich, Shannon McQueen, Trey Marcham, Randi Pankratz, Terry Nichols, Tanner Swanson, Britton Bock, Richard Vander Weerd, Jace Vander Weerd, Nick Chivello, Sean Dodenhoff, Matt Streeter, Floyd Alvis, Gary Conterno, Taylor Simas, and more.

Placerville Speedway is located on the El Dorado County Fairgrounds in Placerville, California at 100 Placerville Drive. Adult Tickets are $16, Senior Tickets are $14, Junior Tickets are $12, and Children Tickets are $6.
