Elko Speedway

Elko New Market, MN

WoO

UMSS Traditional Sprints

34 WoO

Sam Hafertepe Jr. (3rd car out to time) set quick time at 12.507 seconds. Chad Kemenah (8th car out) was second quick, followed by Sammy Swindell (6th), Daryn Pittman (7th), Tim Kaeding (5th), Donny Shatz (9th), Brad Sweet (15th), Cody Darrah (23rd), Ian Madsen (10th) and Kerry Madsen (14th). Derrik Lusk went up in smoke in hot laps, and track record holder, Travis Whitney, lost a piston. Both scratched for the night. The track went away fast in qualifying, giving a big advantage to an early pill draw.

Heat one (started): 1. Brooke Tatnell 25 (1) 2. I. Madsen 18 (2) 3. Kaeding 83 (3) 4. Hafertepe (4) 5. Steve Kinser 11 (5) / 6. Mark Dobmeier 13 (7) 7. Dustin Selvage 7K (6) 8. Davey Heskin 56 (8) DNS – Lusk 93

Five of the eight starters were Knoxville regulars, including Tatnell and Madsen who transferred to the Dash by finishing one-two. Tatnell led a mostly single-file 10-lap affair.

Heat two (started): 1. K. Madsen 29 (2) 2. Joey Saldana 71m (1) 3. Schatz 15 (3) 4. Kemenah 63 (4) 5. Paul McMahan 51 (5) / 6. Jason Johnson 41 (7) 7. David Gravel 6 (6) 8. Ryan Wilson 19 (8) DNS – Whitney 16

Madsen led green to checker.

Heat three (started): 1. Danny Lasoski 1m (1) 2. Sweet 49 (3) 3. Kraig Kinser 11K (2) 4. Swindell 1 (4) 5. Wayne Johnson 77x (6) / 6. Brian Brown 21 (5) 7. Skyler Prochaska 35 (7) 8. Austin Johnson 81 (8)

Lasoski checked out on the field, while Sweet worked by K. Kinser early to gain the Dash transfer. W. Johnson squeezed on the high side of Brown twice early on for the final transfer.

Heat four (started): 1. Lucas Wolfe 82 (1) 2. Craig Dollansky 7 (2) 3. Darrah 4 (3) 4. Pittman 9 (4) 5. Terry McCarl 24 (6) / 6. Jason Sides 7s (5) 7. Bill Balog 17B (7) 8. Alan Gilbertson 97 (8)

The most competitive heat saw a great race early between Dollansky, Darrah and Pittman for second through fourth, and McCarl held off Sides in another good battle.

Dash (started): 1. Dollansky (1) 2. K. Madsen (2) 3. I. Madsen (3) 4. Kemenah (5) 5. Hafertepe (6) 6. Sweet (4) 7. Saldana (8) 8. Lasoski (9) 9. Wolfe (10) 10. Tatnell (7)

Dollansky led the 8-lap distance. With four in the books, Tatnell came to a stop and exited, setting up a double-file restart that yielded little drama.

B main (started): 1. Brown (1) 2. Sides (2) 3. Gravel (4) 4. Prochaska (7) / 5. J. Johnson (6) 6. Selvage (3) 7. Heskin (9) 8. Balog (8) 9. A. Johnson (11) 10. Gilbertson (10) 11. Dobmeier (5) DNS – Wilson, Lusk, Whitney

Brown led Sides and Gravel the whole way. The race was for fourth. On the second lap, Dobmeier, Selvage and J. Johnson were three-wide for the spot until Dobs settled into it. Balog spun five laps into the 12-lapper, bringing caution. J. Johnson moved into the final transfer. While reaching for the white flag, the flagman hit the red light switch slowing things and setting up a climactic green, white, checker finish. Dobmeier squeezed by J. Johnson for fourth on the restart. The two made heavy contact on the white flag lap in one and two and got tangled. Prochaska slid by out of nowhere to take the final transfer.

A main (started): 1. Kaeding (13) 2. K. Madsen (2) 3. Dollansky (1) 4. Pittman (12) 5. Kemenah (4) 6. Darrah (15) 7. Schatz (14) 8. Wolfe (9) 9. Sweet (6) 10. McMahan (18) 11. Tatnell (10) 12. Saldana (7) 13. Sides (20) 14. I. Madsen (3) 15. Swindell (11) 16. K. Kinser (16) 17. McCarl (23) 18. S. Kinser (17) 19. Prochaska (22) 20. Gravel (21) 21. Hafertepe (5) 22. Lasoski (8) 23. Brown (19) 24. W. Johnson (24). Lap Leaders: Dollansky 1-14, K. Madsen 15-33, Kaeding 34. Hard-charger: Kaeding.

W. Johnson elected for the tail. Dollansky led K. Madsen and I. Madsen early in the event scheduled for 40 laps. Kemenah worked into the top three on the second go-around. Things were getting interesting in lapped traffic when W. Johnson slowed and exited with 12 laps in. Swindell repaired a flat right rear after stopping on the restart. McCarl also visited the work area and returned. K. Madsen, who was dogging Dollansky before the caution, continued his pursuit and took the lead on lap 15. Kaeding was now on the move and passed Kemenah for third, only to have the move negated when eighth running Hafertepe blew a right rear tire and brought caution. On the restart, Kaeding moved to third, then shot around Dollansky for second. Two laps later, he was by K. Madsen, whose motor sounded sour to me when going by. Before another lap could be put in the books, Tatnell flipped in turns one and two. A brief light shower fell, and the race was called at 34 laps.

UMSS Traditional Sprints

Heat one (started): 1. Kevin Bradwell 95 (1) 2. Johnny Parsons III 12 (5) 3. Jared Goerges 9 (2) 4. Lucas Milz 60 (6) 5. Cam Schafer 54 (3) 6. Katrina Santbine 13K (4)

Bradwell led throughout in the 10-lapper, holding off Parsons the last few laps. Santbine went up in smoke with four laps in the books.

Heat two (started): 1. Jeff Pellersels 1 (3) 2. Danny Stordahl 34 (1) 3. Rob Caho Jr. 78 (5) 4. Mike Mueller 87 (6) 5. Brad Nelson 7N (4) 6. Tom Porter 2 (2)

Stordahl led the first six laps. A good race developed, with Pellersels taking the lead on lap seven.

A main (started): 1. Parsons III (2) 2. Bradwell (3) 3. Pellersels (1) 4. Goerges (7) 5. Milz (6) 6. Caho Jr. (4) 7. Schafer (9) 8. Mueller (11) 9. Nelson (8) 10. Stordahl (5) 11. Porter (10)

Parsons III took the lead right away and never gave it up in the non-stop 20-lapper. Bradwell did apply late pressure in traffic, but it wasn't enough.

Damn, looks like another stacked field for the 410's!

On a side note, I just wanted to recognize that it looks like the UMSS traditional car count was at 12 cars. I know it's not a lot of cars, but it looks to me like they are growing slowly, but surely. Nice to see they can do a couple of heats and an a main. Hope they can keep building!

There will be over 20 when everyone shows up. They're based 90 miles northeast of Elko at Saint Croix Valley through some nasty Friday traffic (on fishing opener weekend) and unlike the Outlaws these guys would have to take off work early to get there. They shine at their home track, a tight little quarter mile, and are definitely worth a look. They're a limited engine similar to a B Mod engine and they run for a few hundred bucks so we're not going to see every car turn up at every show, especially on Friday nights a couple hours from their home base. They fill a niche and are a lot of fun to watch. Saint Croix Valley has been under new management since last year and it's one of those "throwback" kind of places that I find refreshing in these days of big money. Guys are getting into these cars starting around the $6500 range for used chassis and competitive motors and it's generating enough interest that guys (and gals) are coming into the class from some of the Mod and Stock Car classes. They're obviously not on the level of the big boys but they're serving a great purpose of reviving interest in open wheel racing and are a lot of fun to watch for those of us who can enjoy something a few steps down the ladder from the 360's and 410's.

Here's my incar video from last night's UMSS feature, the track was very smooth except for the burm that you will see, wish I would have. Track was pretty slick for these cars in the feature which tends to lead to follow the leader races. There was tack in the heats that made for better racing. St Croix Valley Raceway is almost always tacky or at least has 2 lines so we have some really good races on that quarter mile track.

Balog dominates the IRA. Isn't WoO material however. So when these clowns tell you how great the IRA it shows how little they know.

My Elko thoughts:

Big crowd, lots of first timers or once a year sprint car fans.

Heats were follow the leader, but the B main was good with Dobmeier and Johnson battling. A Main had a ton of passing, with TK and Pittman leading the way.

Flagman was dangerously out of his league, seemed to not have much of a clue what was going on.
