USAC/CRA SPRINTS RETURN TO PERRIS FOR “DON FLANDERS CLASSIC”

SANTA MARIA, CA - APRIL 30, 2013... This Saturday, May 4th, the cars and stars of the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series will return to Perris Auto Speedway. The “Don Flanders Classic” will also showcase the PAS Senior Sprint Cars and PAS Young Gun Sprint Cars presented by The Sprint Car Driving Experience. In addition, the event is "The Power of Purple Night" benefiting the City of Perris Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society. The spectator gates will open at 5:00pm, with racing at "America's Premier Dirt Track" to begin at 7:00pm.
Saturday’s race honors Don Flanders, who supported racing for many years as a car owner, sponsor, innovator, and “super fan.” Known by many for helping underfunded teams and contributing to special events, longtime fans will remember his unique #911 Sprint Car. Driven by Gary W. Howard and Lloyd Kraft in the mid-1990s, Flanders’ car had a clear body for race fans to see the driver and engine compartment.
After winning both main events at Yuma, Arizona’s Cocopah Speedway, Concord’s “The Demon” Damion Gardner is the new point leader. Racing Mark Alexander's #4A Scott Sales Company / Competition Suspension Inc. Spike, Gardner has two heat race victories, one dash win, six top-5 finishes, and 54 feature laps led to his credit. The 2005 Champion will be looking for his series leading 44th career victory and increasing his point lead.
Four points behind Gardner is his teammate, Nic Faas of Huntington Beach. Piloting Mark Alexander's #4 Scott Sales Company / Competition Suspension Inc. Spike, Faas set a new 1-lap track record and ran second and fourth at Yuma. The former USAC Western Midget Champion won at Perris on April 6th and has two Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, one heat race victory, six top-5 finishes, and 7 feature laps led on the year. Nic will have his sights on reclaiming the point lead with another victory at Perris Auto Speedway.
Sitting third in the championship points is Campbell’s Bud Kaeding. Driving Junior Bowman’s #29 Buster & Ziggy Enterprises / Kaeding Performance Bullet, Bud scored fourth and second at Cocopah Speedway. Currently, the 3-time Oval Nationals Champion has one dash win, one semi-main win, three top-5 finishes, and six feature laps led on the season. Kaeding will be looking to score his first win of the year on Saturday.
Mike Spencer of Temecula is fourth in the point standings. Racing Ron Chaffin’s #50 Grubstake Mini Storage / Madera Produce Maxim, Spencer claimed two third place finishes at Yuma. To date, the five-time champion has two Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, two heat race victories, three top-5 finishes, and 7 feature laps led. On Saturday, Mike will have his sights on tying Gardner’s 25th USAC/CRA feature win at Perris and continuing his run to a sixth title.
Phoenix, Arizona’s R.J. Johnson is fifth in the point chase. Piloting Bobby Martin’s #51 Weiler Farms / Pecon Builders Maxim, Johnson ran sixth and fifth at Cocopah Speedway. Currently, the former Arizona Midget Champion has one feature win, four heat race victories, two top-5 finishes, and 29 feature laps led to his credit. This Saturday, R.J. will be looking to add the “Don Flanders Classic” to his resume.
Among the other drivers expected to be in action are “The Cadillac” Cody Williams, Brody Roa, Austin Williams, Matt Mitchell, Ryan Bernal, “Super” Rickie Gaunt, “The Magic Man” Mike Martin, “The Ripper” Rip Williams, Seth Wilson, “Dynamite” David Cardey, Richard Vander Weerd, Markus Niemela, Jace Vander Weerd, and many more.
Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in Perris, California. Adult tickets are $25, Senior tickets are $20, Active Military, Students (13-18), and Kids tickets (6-12) are $5. Children’s tickets (5 and under) are FREE.
