DAMION GARDNER STAYS HOT AT YUMA

YUMA, AZ – APRIL 21, 2013... Taking the lead from Bud Kaeding on lap seven, “The Demon” Damion Gardner of Concord, California won his second straight feature at Yuma’s Cocopah Speedway. Saturday’s $2,500 victory was Gardner’s 43rd career Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car triumph as he was followed by Bud Kaeding, Mike Spencer, Nic Faas, and R.J. Johnson.

Racing Mark Alexander’s #4A Scott Sales Company / Competition Suspension Inc. Spike, Damion Gardner qualified third, won the Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1, and ran second in the dash. With two heat race victories, six top-5 finishes, and 54 feature laps led, “The Demon” in the new point leader heading to Perris on May 4th.

Campbell, California’s Bud Kaeding led the first six laps of the feature but had to settle for second on this night. Driving Junior Bowman’s #29 Ultimate Offroad / Buster & Ziggy Enterprises Maxim, Kaeding was fifth quick in time trials, third in his heat race, and won the 6-lap dash. The 3-time USAC Silver Crown Champion left Yuma third in points with one semi-main win and five top-10 finishes on the season.

For the second night in a row, Mike Spencer of Temecula, California finished third at Cocopah Speedway. Piloting Ron Chaffin's #50 Grubstake Mini Storage / Madera Produce Maxim, Spencer was second fast, second in his heat race, and fourth in the dash. To date, the five-time champion is fourth in the standings with two Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, two heat race victories, four top-10 finishes, and 7 feature laps led.

Huntington Beach, California’s Nic Faas claimed fourth in the main event after starting sixth. Driving Mark Alexander’s #4 Scott Sales Company / Competition Suspension Inc. Spike, Faas earned his second Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award, placed second in his heat race, and ran sixth in the dash. Yuma’s 1-lap track record holder is now second in points with one feature win, one heat race victory, six top-5 finishes, and 7 feature laps led on the year.

R.J. Johnson of Phoenix took fifth at the checkered flags. Racing Bobby Martin’s #51 Weiler Farms / Pecon Builders Maxim, Johnson qualified fourth, ran third in his heat race, and scored third in the dash. The former Arizona Midget Champion sits fifth in the standings with one feature win, four heat race victories, three top-10 finishes, and 29 feature laps led to his credit.

“The Cadillac” Cody Williams of Yorba Linda earned the night’s Keizer Wheels / Racing Optics "Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with a thirteenth place run from seventeenth. Piloting Jack Jory’s #44 John Jory Corporation / AMA Plastics Spike, Williams had problems and did not qualify. Scoring eighth in his heat race, the former National Sprint Car Rookie of the Year rebounded in the main event. Currently sixth in the standings, Cody has four top-10 finishes in the campaign.

Yuma’s Mike Martin won the 10-lap DJ Safety Heat Race #2 in front of his hometown fans. Driving his #16B Ultimate Offroad / Naquin Precision Earth Moving Maxim, Martin was sixth fast in time trials and scored fourteenth in the main event. Canyon’s “Hall of Fame Classic” winner is fourteenth in points with two heat race victories, two Keizer Wheels / Racing Optics Hard Charger Awards, and one top-10 finish on the season.
