NIC FAAS LEADS USAC/CRA TO YUMA DOUBLEHEADER
by Lance Jennings

SANTA MARIA, CA - APRIL 15, 2013... Starting this Friday, April 19th, the cars and stars of the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series are set for two nights of action at Yuma’s Cocopah Speedway. The popular Factory Stocks will share the spotlight on Friday and the rugged Street Stocks will join the Saturday event. The pit gates will open at 2:00pm, spectator gates will open at 5:00pm, and racing at the fast 3/8-mile facility will start at 7:00pm. NOTICE TO COMPETITORS: Mufflers are required at Cocopah Speedway and inserts are not considered mufflers.

Last June, Buena Park’s Brody Roa led all 30 laps to score his first career USAC/CRA main event at Cocopah Speedway. Last year’s Most Improved Driver joined “The Gasman” Richard Griffin, “The Tempe Tornado” Lealand McSpadden, Mike Kirby, and “The Flying Shoe” Ron Shuman as feature winners at the Yuma facility.

After winning at Perris Auto Speedway on April 6th, Nic Faas of Huntington Beach is the new point leader. Driving Mark Alexander's #4 Scott Sales Company / Competition Suspension Inc. Spike, Faas has one heat race victory, four top-5 finishes, and 7 feature laps led on the season. Yuma’s 1-lap track record holder will be looking to increase his championship lead by sweeping both main events.

Faas’ teammate, Concord’s “The Demon” Damion Gardner is second in points. Piloting Mark Alexander's #4A Scott Sales Company / Competition Suspension Inc. Spike, Gardner ran second at Perris after restarting at the back. The 2005 Champion has one heat race victory and four top-5 finishes in 2013. “The Demon” will be making his first appearance at Yuma and has his sights on joining the winner’s list.

Bryan Clauson of Noblesville, Indiana sits third in the point standings. Racing Mike Martin's #16B Ultimate Offroad / Naquin Precision Earth Moving Maxim, Clauson did not race at Perris Auto Speedway. The defending USAC National Sprint Car Champion has two feature wins, two Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Awards, one heat race victory, three top-5 finishes, and 39 feature laps led. Bryan has returned to the Midwest and will compete with the National Series at Eldora Speedway.

Campbell’s Bud Kaeding is fourth in the point chase. Driving Junior Bowman’s #29 Buster & Ziggy Enterprises / Kaeding Performance Bullet, Kaeding scored ninth at Perris after starting eleventh. Currently, the 3-time Oval Nationals Champion has one semi-main win and one top-5 finish on the season. Bud will be looking to break through with back-to-back visits to Yuma’s victory circle.

Ryan Bernal of Hollister is fifth in the championship points. Piloting Keith Ford’s #73 King Racing Products / A&A Precision Machine Spike, Bernal ran fourth in the Perris main event. The former USAC West Coast Series Rookie of the Year has one hard charger award and two top-5 finishes on the season. As this writing goes to press, Ryan may skip Yuma to compete in Watsonville and Tulare.

Among the other top contenders expected to be in action are “Super” Rickie Gaunt, “Cadillac” Cody Williams, 5-time champion Mike Spencer, R.J. Johnson, Brody Roa, Austin Williams, Matt Mitchell, “The Ripper” Rip Williams, “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr., “The Magic Man” Mike Martin, Seth Wilson, and more.

Cocopah Speedway is located at the intersection of US Highway 95 and County 15th Street in Somerton, Arizona. Single day tickets are $17 for Adults, Senior/Military tickets are $15, Skybox tickets are $30, Junior tickets (12-7) are $5, and Children (6 & Under) are FREE. Pit Passes are $35 and dry camping is available free of charge. For more information, visit www.cocopahspeedway.com or call (928) 344-1563.
