NIC FAAS WINS THRILLER AT THE PAS!
by Lance Jennings

PERRIS, CA – APRIL 7, 2013... With the white flag waving, Nic Faas of Huntington Beach slid past “Dynamite” David Cardey for the lead and sailed to victory at Perris Auto Speedway. The win marked the seventh career Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car triumph for Faas as “The Demon” Damion Gardner, Cardey, Ryan Bernal, and “The Cadillac” Cody Williams rounded out the top five drivers.

Starting on the pole position, David Cardey powered by Markus Niemela to grab the lead in the south turns. While several flips and cautions would halt the action, Cardey was strong and maintained command. Charging from the fifth starting spot, Faas was in pursuit and applied heavy pressure. Racing side by side, David fought off the repeated challenges until late race traffic and reported fuel issues developed. Nic took advantage and led the final two laps to score the victory at Don Kazarian’s 1/2-mile clay oval.

Racing Mark Alexander’s #4 Scott Sales Company / Competition Suspension Inc. Spike, Nic Faas left Perris as the new USAC/CRA point leader. The former USAC Western Midget Series Champion was third fast out of 36 cars and won the Saldana Racing Products / Circle Track Performance Heat Race #3. Nic has four top-5 finishes and 7 feature laps led as the series travels to Yuma, Arizona’s Cocopah Speedway on April 19th.

Concord’s “The Demon” Damion Gardner claimed second after restarting at the back. Originally starting fourth, the pilot of Mark Alexander’s #4A Scott Sales Company / Competition Suspension Inc. Spike was caught in an early tangle, resulting in a flat tire. The 2005 champion put on a show as he charged to the front from nineteenth. Now second in the point chase, Gardner qualified fourth and won the Weld Racing / SBI Fuel Systems Heat Race #4. With four top-5 finishes on the year, Damion plans on racing both nights at Cocopah Speedway.

After leading twenty-eight laps, “Dynamite” David Cardey of Riverside had to settle for third on this night. Driving Tom and Laurie Sertich’s #92 Huntington Beach Glass & Mirror / Victory Race Cars entry, Cardey was eighth quick in time trials and second in his heat race. The former California Lightning Sprint Champion is close to giving the Moose Racing Team another victory, sitting twelfth in the standings with one top-5 finish to his credit.

Hollister’s Ryan Bernal scored fourth in the main event after a hard fought 30-laps of action. Racing Keith Ford’s #73 King Racing Products / A&A Precision Machine Spike, Bernal qualified sixth and placed fourth in his heat race. The 2-time Santa Maria track champion is fifth in points with one hard charger award and three top-10 finishes on the season. The USAC West Coast point leader might pass on Tulare to make his first start in Yuma.

“The Cadillac” Cody Williams of Yorba Linda had a strong run, taking fifth after starting tenth. Piloting Jack Jory’s #44 John Jory Corporation / AMA Plastics Spike, Williams qualified tenth and was second in his heat race. Currently seventh in the point chase, the former National Sprint Car Rookie of the Year has three top-10 finishes on the season. “The Cadillac” will be looking for his first series win at Cocopah Speedway.

Yuma, Arizona's “The Magic Man” Mike Martin earned his second Keizer Wheels / Racing Optics "Hard Charger / Best Passing Job” honors with an eleventh place run from twenty-third. Piloting his #16B Ultimate Offroad / Naquin Precision Earth Moving Maxim, Martin was sixteenth fast, sixth in his heat race, and sixteenth in the semi-main after flipping his machine. Taking a provisional, Mike charged forward and is now seventeenth in the standings. “The Magic Man” will be looking forward to racing in front of his hometown fans.

Temecula’s Mike Spencer earned his second Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award of the season. Driving Ron Chaffin's #50 Grubstake Mini Storage / Madera Produce Maxim, Spencer won the Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1, but was caught in an early tangle that sent him to the back of the main event. Currently eighth in points, the five-time champion soldiered on and claimed sixth at the finish line. With two top-10 finishes and seven feature laps led on the season, Mike will have his sights on winning both nights at Yuma.

R.J. Johnson of Phoenix, Arizona won the night’s DJ Safety Heat Race #2. Racing Bobby Martin’s #51 Weiler Farms / Pecon Builders Maxim, Johnson timed in twenty-second fast and scored seventeenth in the feature after an early exit. The “Copper On Dirt” winner is ninth in the standings with three heat race wins and 29 feature laps led on the year. R.J. will return to USAC Southwest action at Queen Creek before competing in Yuma’s doubleheader.

Torrance’s “Super” Rickie Gaunt won the 12-lap Competition Suspension Inc. / Rod End Supply Semi-Main. Piloting David Miller's #66 Tom Roberts Design / Barnes Systems Eagle, Gaunt qualified fifth, ran fifth in his heat race, and scored thirteenth in the main event. The former SCRA Champion is currently sixth in points with two top-10 finishes on the season. Working on a limited budget, Rickie and the Miller Motorsports Team hope to be in action at Cocopah Speedway.
