Kerry Madsen – Another Hard Charger!
(Bill W) March 27, 2013 – Kerry Madsen is racking up Hard-charger awards with the World of Outlaws, but he would rather not. That means he's starting towards the rear. He pleased a sold out crowd in Stockton, California with a run from 24th to 7th. This weekend the series heads to the little bullring in Merced on Friday.
Starting towards the rear reflects on qualifying time trials. "We're just a little off in qualifying," says Kerry. "We made a couple of changes. We haven't made up any ground in qualifying, but the thing is…we are so good from the racing side of it."
The St. Mary's, New South Wales native was 33rd quick at the Stockton 99 Dirt Track on Friday. "We qualified badly," says Kerry. "We started 11th in the B and came up and ran second. We started 24th in the A and ran seventh. The racecar was unbelievably good!"
It was onto the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico on Saturday. "We thought we were on a good path with the run at Stockton," says Kerry. "We went into Chico, and qualified 35th. Something's wrong there, we just need to get better. Our racing is excellent. I saw a stat that we had passed 96 cars this year, so the racecar has been great. We're averaging passing ten cars a night. We just need to qualify and get started towards the front."
The tough run in time trials at Chico left him out of the mix come feature time. "At Chico, we just couldn't make it happen," says Kerry. "We got caught out. There just wasn't a whole lot of room to pass and we couldn't make it. We opted not to use a provisional. That kind of killed us in points, but I'm thinking with the qualifying, we'll make those back up."
The Keneric Racing #29 team is trying to put their finger on qualifying, while the racing side of the equation is awesome. "It's a combination of things," says Kerry. "We weren't qualifying badly earlier. We thought we'd come back and be right. There's definitely a tire situation. What we are doing with them isn't jiving. What's throwing us off is how good we are racing."
The team will continue to work hard. "We just need to keep working," says Kerry. "I'm confident we'll get it. Usually when you go through something like this, you come out the other side beneficial for it. I reckon that will be the case. What we are doing for the races is working. I think we're in the right direction now."
This Friday's race at Merced proves to be interesting. It's the smallest track the WoO sees. "It's one of those tracks where you can't gauge a lot," says Kerry. "Even if we go and qualify well, you can't say that we were really onto it. We will really know when we get to the Midwest. Time will tell. We need to qualify into the heat inversions. That's step number one."
