Kerry Madsen – California WoO Swing Continues!
(Bill W) March 20, 2013 – Kerry Madsen had a top ten finish last weekend at the Thunderbowl Speedway in Tulare, California with the World of Outlaws. The finish came in the prelim. Some bad luck surfaced in the finale, however, and the Keneric Racing #29 team has their focus on this weekend's action in Stockton and Chico.
Friday night at Tulare, Kerry timed in 17th quick. "We didn't qualify great," he says. "We missed the inversion by one. I was running fourth in the heat. On a restart, I hit a hole. I screwed up and we missed out on a transfer (finishing seventh) and had to run the B."
The St. Mary's, New South Wales driver had his work cut out for him in the B, but he managed to grab a transfer to the main event. "It was actually quite a hectic B," says Kerry. "One of the cars, in the first corner, went to the inside. He ended up flipping and I hit him and bent a draglink. That screwed up the steering, but I was able to putt around and get in the A."
Kerry started sixteenth and advanced to tenth in the feature. "It was a typical story for us," he says. "We had a great car in the feature. We moved forward and ran tenth. The track was pretty narrow around the cushion. It was hard to pass, but we made good ground and had a good racecar."
Turns one and two were treacherous last weekend. "I haven't seen a track that rough with holes that big in a long time," says Kerry. "It was interesting. Everyone was kind of just running the bottom really."
In Saturday's finale, time trials brought a familiar result. "We ended up timing in the exact same spot (17th)," says Kerry. "We went out late, and the track had lost quite a bit, so it wasn't the end of the world."
After advancing from sixth to fourth in his heat, Kerry lined up inside row nine for the main event. "We were moving forward in the A main," he says. "I think we were up to twelfth. We got together with Brian Brown and tipped over. We came back out and we were gaining some spots. We got a flat tire, and that was that."
The DNF was unfortunate, but the team was quickly in preparations for this weekend's WoO events. A new venue awaits on Friday in Stockton at the Stockton 99 Raceway. "I've heard a lot," says Kerry of the track. "None of it ever seems true when you get there, but I'm excited to go. There is a lot of interest surrounding it. I know the fans are really excited. There have already been a lot of tickets sold."
On Saturday, it will be on to the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico for the Mini-Gold Cup. "I didn't do too well there in the fall," says Kerry. "We'd like to go back and avenge that. We'd like to finish up front."
