Kerry Madsen – Putting on a Show!

(Bill W) March 13, 2013 – It wasn't the kind of show Kerry Madsen was hoping for, but he definitely put one on last week with the World of Outlaws. Qualifying hiccups are tough to overcome, and the St. Mary's, New South Wales, Australia native had to do so last week. On the first of two nights in Las Vegas he charged from 25th to 5th. On Saturday he was the hard-charger again, shooting from 21st to 12th in Tucson, Arizona.

With a tough field on hand in Las Vegas, Kerry timed in 33rd quick last Wednesday. "We definitely need to work on it," he acknowledges of needed qualifying improvements. "It's going to be a work in progress, because of the tires and some other factors. We're definitely off in the qualifying, but our racing has been awesome. It's still early in the year, and I think we'll fix it. We'll be aggressive to do that. Something is definitely right come race time."

Despite a Wednesday heat run of 9th to 6th, and a charge from 13th to 6th in frightful company, Kerry would have to take a provisional in the main event. "That's the problem with qualifying bad," he says. "You have to race your way out of it every time, and you can't do that. We couldn't do that on Wednesday. There was a good quality field there."

Still, after taking a provisional, he had the fans entertained by passing 20 cars in a run to fifth. "It was just an awesome racecar," says Kerry of the mount prepared by Rob Hart and Shane Bowers. "We could run the bottom or the top. We were passing cars, and they were good cars. Our race pace was great."

Qualifying (16th) was not as big an issue the second night at Vegas Thursday. Kerry won his heat from the pole, but disaster struck at an unlikely time. "We were going to have another good night," he says. "Something snapped over in turn two after we took the checkers. We junked the car. Coming out of the corner…something snapped, we don't know what it was. We pulled the back-up down and ran around and got some points is basically what it was."

Because he had a back-up car, Kerry had to start the main event 24th and drove to 16th. "It was unfortunate," he says. "We could have come out of Vegas really strong. Unfortunately, we don't know what happened. We just had broken pieces."

Qualifying was an issue again Saturday at Tucson. After timing in 21st, Kerry came from seventh to fifth in his heat to qualify for a feature in which he started 21st. "We didn't qualify well again," he says. "We got up to 12th. The track was kind of around the bottom. There wasn't much passing, or much on top. We had a good racecar and drove up to twelfth."

Kerry has a good track record at this weekend's WoO stop. It will be Friday and Saturday at the Thunderbowl Speedway bullring in Tulare, California. "I've always done well there," he says. "I'm confident we can do that. I'm a little nervous about the qualifying yet though. Hopefully, we can go there and get a couple good laps in. The reality is you need to be in the Dash to contend for the win. We don't need to come out and set quick time, but we need to put ourselves in position."
