Brady Bacon – Vegas Charge!

(Bill W) March 11, 2013 – Brady Bacon struggled in qualifying with the World of Outlaws last Wednesday and Thursday at Las Vegas, but once the green flag fell, he had one of the fastest cars on the raceway. With a stout field, he was able to transfer through his heat to make the show both nights despite being outside of the qualifying invert. He will take a break before tackling the Devil's Bowl Speedway with ASCS in two weeks.

Driving Shawn Petersen's #14x with his motor, Brady qualified 26th both nights. "We were just struggling qualifying to be where we needed to be for a good solid lap," he says. "We don't qualify, so it can be hard to find a balance on where the car needs to be."

Despite starting seventh in his heat race, he worked his way forward to fourth and a transfer to the main event. "We didn't qualify well, but we raced well," says Brady. "We had a really good car to race with. We came from seventh in our heat to finish fourth."

Starting 23rd in the feature, Brady was a rocket heading forward…twice. "We were able to work our way up to about twelfth," he says. "I got into a little grease on the bottom of the track there and spun. We had to go to the tail and restart. We were still able to come back up to eleventh. Without that spin, we had a good chance at a top five. We were able to pass people, and there wasn't a whole lot of passing for others. I was happy with that."

Thursday started the same way…26th quick. Again, Brady transferred through his heat, running fifth (from seventh). He would start 22nd in the main event. "The track just wasn't there to race on like there was Wednesday," says the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver. "There wasn't really a top to it. Other than a lap after a restart, you had to be on the bottom. There was water down there. We got pushed down in the grease and about spun out again. It was tough to pass."

He would end up 21st. "I had a good car," says Brady. "I was catching the guys in front of me. Then I'd get pushed in the grease again…I did the same thing over and over again."

Despite the finishes, Brady was encouraged with his speed over the two nights. "It was disappointing, but it was a good shakedown," he says. "I think I'll be a little better in my car when the time comes. Shawn has a great car, but everyone knows you're comfortable in your own car. I'd like to thank Shawn and all of his guys for letting me run the last two weekends. I'm looking forward to going to Devil's Bowl with them too. I would have been sitting at home watching if Shawn didn't make it possible for me to race."

A lot of people charge in Vegas, but Brady's was a different kind. "We definitely had a fast racecar," he says. "We just didn't get the qualifying down. We made the show both nights. It was tough…probably tougher than a Nationals qualifying night. There were 40 cars, but probably 35 capable of winning. We had a really fast car. We'll go to work a little on the qualifying deal."

The ASCS will tackle Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas March 22nd and 23rd.
