Kerry Madsen – Successful Go "Down Under"!
(Bill W) March 7, 2013 – Before he entertained fans last evening in Las Vegas with a run from 25th to 5th with the Outlaws, Kerry Madsen campaigned for two weekends in Western Australia and picked up a pair of podium finishes. A third place finish in the World Series Sprintcars finale at the Perth Motorplex preceded a third place run at the "Krikke Boys Shootout" in Bunbury. Those two finishes also came after starting deep in the field.
The Keneric Racing #29 team was primed for action in Perth two weekends ago, but got behind the 8-ball in the WSS prelim. "We had an issue in the prelim and didn't get a finish," says Kerry. "That buried us in the points for the final night."
The St. Mary's, New South Wales native dug himself out in the finale, however, with a heat win (from 4th) and a second place heat run (from 7th). "We were able to regain some points in those heat races," he says. "We started 14th in the feature, and I had a real run going. We were able to get up to second. We just needed a few more things to go our way and we could have won it. Starting in the back, it's hard to get a win, but we had a great racecar."
It was on to Bunbury last weekend. Similar issues arose in the prelim of the "Krikke Boys Shootout". "We DNFed the first night there too," says Kerry. "We had a flat tire. I grazed the wall with my right rear coming out of turn two. They don't have work areas in Australia. That buried us in points again."
He would run third in his heat and second in his Dash in Sunday's finale. His charge to third came from twelfth in the main event. "We had a really good racecar," says Kerry, who had Shane Bowers along to wrench. "With a few more laps we could have had some more spots. The track wasn't real passable, so that was a good finish."
All in all, the solid finishes were satisfactory for Kerry and the team. "I was pretty happy," he says. "We had two podiums in two weekends. It was a great run. It was unfortunate that we got behind in the prelims. The main thing was we had strong final nights. That was the goal going in. It would have been nice to have some wins, but it was a strong trip."
Bob and Peter Gavranich are co-owners of the team, and Kerry was happy to race at places close to home for them. "It was great to run with the Keneric team down there," he says. "I can't thank Bob and Peter enough for what they do for the team. We're ready to tackle this season with the Outlaws now."
Action continues tonight in Las Vegas with the WoO before moving on to Tucson, Arizona Saturday.
