Wednesdays with Wayne – World of Outlaws "Rookie" Chase Starts Tonight!

(Bill W) March 6, 2013 – After competing at Cocopah Speedway last weekend with ASCS, Wayne Johnson joins up with the World of Outlaws Western Swing starting tonight in Las Vegas. The Knoxville, Iowa driver hopes to compete for Rookie of the Year honors with the Outlaws this year, as he plans on competing in about fifty events with the WoO in 2013.

Friday's race at Cocopah Speedway near Yuma started with a fifth place finish in the heat. "I'm not going to use the draw for an excuse," says Wayne. "It's the same for everyone. We just kind of got behind the 8-ball both nights with it. We just weren't good enough to rebound. The heat was stacked on Friday. The racetrack was still kind of hard to pass on. I was kind of trapped there on the bottom behind those guys."

After finishing third in the B, Wayne drove from 19th to 8th in the main event. "We were just a little bit off in the B and all night long," he says. "We were rolling around there pretty good in the feature. We had a lot of trouble with some of the lapped cars. Eighth was really what we could get out of that."

In Saturday's finale, Wayne again drew in the back of his heat. "The track was dry and dirty on Saturday," he says. "It was like racing on marbles a little bit. We were in the back of that heat. We were able to finish fourth which put us in the show starting twelfth."

After retreating early in the main event, Wayne climbed into the top ten and finished ninth. "We weren't good," he admits. "We backed up to 16th or 17th like we did in Tucson. I finally figured out how to get rolling around there. We just aren't where we need to be with the car just yet. I'm not real happy about it. We'll keep plugging away."

Though the finish wasn't what he hoped for, a check of lap times told a promising story. "We did look at the Race Monitor app and saw that our lap times the last eight to ten laps were faster than the leaders," says Wayne. "We were coming. It was just too late. The car seems to get faster later in the races this year. I don't know if I'm just figuring out how I need to drive it as the race goes on, or what."

Wayne is excited to get going with the World of Outlaws. Tonight and tomorrow night will be in Las Vegas, and the series will move to Tucson, Arizona on Saturday before heading for California. "We're pretty pumped up," he says. "We're just hoping to get (the car) balanced. We've tried to get it tighter. Racing more 410 races…we need to be doing that. I think we've been looking forward to the 410 deal so much that we've been leaning that way."

Thanks to his great partners, he will be prepared for the West Coast swing and beyond. "We do have a new motor (Fisher) being delivered here," says Wayne. "I don't know if we'll run it right away. We don't want to rush it and have a problem. We have three brand new 410's coming, and we're ready to get going with the season."
