USAC SOUTHWEST SPRINTS READY FOR THURSDAY'S "SIN CITY SHOWDOWN" AT LAS VEGAS
by Lance Jennings

PEORIA, AZ – MARCH 4, 2013... The Las Vegas Motor Speedway's Dirt Track will host the USAC Southwest and USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series this Thursday, March 7th. Sponsored by Hoosier Tire, Southwest Contractors, and the Hose Advantage Store, the "Sin City Showdown" will kickoff the popular 3-race "Grudge Series" and will also showcase the famed World of Outlaw Sprint Cars, Modifieds, and Street Stocks. The spectator gates will open at 5:00pm with racing scheduled for 6:00pm.

Held during NASCAR weekend, the non-point "Sin City Showdown" will feature drivers from Arizona, California, and New Mexico as they battle on the large 1/2-mile oval. Last year, Bud Kaeding won the $2,500 Las Vegas jackpot and Ryan Bernal claimed the inaugural $5,000 "Grudge Series" championship. Over $15,000 was distributed from the point fund and promoters Kevin Montgomery and Chris Kearns are looking for more prize money in 2013.

Leading the charge for the USAC Southwest Sprints is Buckeye's Charles Davis Jr. Piloting the Massey Motorsports' #50 RSS Industries / Rod End Supply RSS, Davis earned his third ASCS Canyon crown in four years. The veteran driver led all drivers with six feature wins last season and will be a favorite to claim the "Sin City Showdown" victory.

Fresh off winning last Saturday's "Copper On Dirt" with USAC/CRA at Canyon Speedway Park, R.J. Johnson of Phoenix was second in last year's ASCS Canyon points. Driving Bobby Martin's #51 Weiler Farms / Pecon Builders Maxim, Johnson won at Queen Creek's Arizona Speedway on November 3rd and scored a victory during this year's Winter Challenge. The second generation driver will have his sights on the Las Vegas winner's circle.

Finishing third in ASCS Canyon points was Las Cruces, New Mexico's "The Real Deal" Rick Ziehl. Splitting last year between Gary Williams' #41W Diamond Mechanical Maxim and John Ziehl's #20 Lucas Oil Maxim, the multi-time ASCS Southwest Champion won at Canyon Speedway Park on October 20th. The veteran driver will be looking to score the $2,500 Las Vegas jackpot.

Piloting his #7K Woodland Auto Display / Weld Racing Maxim, Bruce St. James of Phoenix was fourth in ASCS Canyon standings. The local talk show host did not win an ASCS main event last season, but continues to improve and lead feature laps. St. James could surprise the field and walk away with Thursday's "Sin City Showdown" victory.

Glendale's Dalten Gabbard placed fifth in ASCS points. Driving the family owned #77 BG Chemicals / AZ Heat Trucking Maxim, Gabbard won at Canyon Speedway Park on May 26th. The young driver has shown the ability to compete with the front runners and could score the win at Las Vegas.

Among the other drivers expected to be in action are Mike Martin, Brian Hosford, Josh Pelkey, Andy Reinbold, Justin Quinn, Bob Ream Jr., Shon Deskins, Tom Ogle, and many more. Bud Kaeding and Ryan Bernal will join a strong USAC West Coast roster including "Hollywood" Danny Faria Jr., Richard Vander Weerd, Ricky Kirkbride, "Showtime" Danny Sheridan, Rusty Carlile, and Jace Vander Weerd. From USAC/CRA, Five-time Champion Mike Spencer and last year's Most Improved Driver Brody Roa will also be in action. The "Sin City Showdown" featured 33 drivers last March and more are expected this year.

The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is located twelve miles north of downtown Las Vegas, Nevada off Interstate 15 at Exit 54 (Speedway Blvd). Adult tickets are $39 and children (12 & under) are FREE. The pit gate will open at 2:00pm and USAC memberships will be honored. Pit passes are $35 for members and $50 for non-members. The USAC Southwest Sprint Car Series would like to thank Sunoco Race Fuels, Hoosier Tire, and the Hose Advantage Store for their support.
