Wednesdays with Wayne – 5:09 to Yuma!
(Bill W) February 27, 2013 – Fifth and ninth place finishes in Tucson, Arizona set up a two-night event near Yuma, Arizona for Wayne Johnson and the Lucas Oil ASCS National series. Cocopah Speedway will host the series a total of four times this season. This Saturday night's feature will pay $10,000 to the winner.
Friday's prelim in Tucson saw Wayne drive from seventh to fourth in his heat race. "We were pretty decent there," he says basking in the sun far from his Knoxville, Iowa home. "I think we were in the first heat, and it was a little tough to pass. The track was actually taking rubber in the heat. There just wasn't a lot of racetrack to get going on."
The finish set him up to start 13th in the feature. The Wayne Johnson Racing #77x was on the move and into the top five by the checkers. "They did a really good job of reworking the track before the feature," says Wayne. "I fell way back at the start of the race. We were back in 15th or 16th. They had a red flag. After that, we really got going. We were able to get up to fifth by the end."
Wayne missed locking into Saturday's finale by one position. "We actually had a chance of a top three and locking in," he says. "I just showed Jeff Swindell the racing line a little early and he took advantage."
Saturday's track was tacky, heavy and fast. Starting outside row two in his heat, Wayne would finish in the runner-up position. "We ran second there behind Tony Bruce," he says. "The racetrack on Saturday night was just way locked down and hard to pass on."
There wasn't much movement by anyone in the feature and Wayne ran ninth after starting tenth. "It was really a product of what the racetrack gave us," he says. "The place is really fast. It's kind of a big 'D'. It's just hauling ass even when it's slick. You get close to someone…you just tighten up. I just got tighter and tighter."
This Friday and Saturday, Wayne heads to Cocopah Speedway near Yuma. It will mark his second trip to the facility. "I think we were third and fifth there last year," he says. "They've done some upgrades and the track looks good. The weather is beautiful, and I'm definitely looking forward to getting there. Just getting out of the snow in Iowa is worth all of this!"
