6TH ANNUAL "COPPER ON DIRT" AT CANYON OPENS TENTH USAC/CRA SEASON
by Lance Jennings

SANTA MARIA, CA - FEBRUARY 26, 2013... This Friday, March 1st, the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series will open their tenth season at Peoria, Arizona's Canyon Speedway Park. The 6th Annual "Copper On Dirt" will also showcase the USAC Western Midgets, West Coast Shootout Late Models, and IMCA Modifieds in two action packed nights of racing. Promoter Kevin Montgomery is offering more than $100,000 in prize money as all four divisions will take to the 1/3-mile oval for two complete shows. The spectator gates will open at 5:00pm with racing set to begin at 7:00pm.

The 6th Annual "Copper On Dirt" will mark the return of traditional 410 sprint cars to the prestigious event. Founded in 2007, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Shane Cottle, and Darren Hagen claimed the checkered flags at the legendary Manzanita Speedway. Levi Jones raced the Tony Stewart Racing car to victory at Tucson's USA Race Park in 2010. The festivities will begin on Thursday night with an open practice session from 6-9pm.

After winning his fifth straight championship, Temecula's Mike Spencer is back at the helm of Ron Chaffin's famed #50 Madera Produce / Grubstake Mini Storage Maxim. Last season was perhaps the most dominant campaign for Spencer, earning 9 main events wins, 13 fast time awards, 5 heat race wins, 20 top-5 finishes, and 167 feature laps led. For Chaffin, the 2012 USAC/CRA Championship was his sixth owner's title in nine years.

For the past two seasons, Nic Faas of Huntington Beach has finished second in the point standings. Piloting Mark Alexander's #4 Scott Sales Company / Competition Suspension Incorporated Spike, Faas had 2 main event wins, 3 fast time awards, 6 heat race victories, 2 hard charger awards, 16 top-10 finishes, and 43 feature laps led. The 2008 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year will be looking to break though with a strong championship bid.

Buena Park's Brody Roa put together a solid campaign, earning Most Improved Driver honors and finishing third in points. Driving the BR Performance owned #91R HD Industries / Burris Racing Spike, Roa won his first main event at Yuma's Cocopah Speedway on June 2nd. The former USAC Ford Focus Midget Champion had 2 heat race victories, 1 semi-main win, 1 hard charger award, 16 top-10 finishes, and 47 feature laps led to his credit. Brody will have his sights on more feature wins and a championship run in 2013.

"The Ripper" Rip Williams of Yorba Linda claimed fourth in the championship points. Piloting Jack Jory's famed black #3 John Jory Corporation / AMA Plastics Spike, Williams still a force to be reckoned with and earned 1 fast time award, 2 heat race victories, 1 semi-main win, 13 top-10 finishes, and led 13 main event laps. The 2004 Champion and National Hall of Fame driver has over 100 main event wins during his career and will be in the hunt for the title.

Austin Williams of Yorba Linda scored fifth in the USAC/CRA standings. Driving Jack Jory's #2 John Jory Corporation / AMA Plastics Spike, Williams won at Santa Maria Speedway on June 16th. The 2009 Rookie of the Year also claimed 5 heat race victories, 1 semi-main win, 2 hard charger awards, 11 top-10 finishes, and led 29 feature laps on the year. Austin will have his sights on the championship.

Among the other top contenders expected to be in action are Hollister's Ryan Bernal, "The Kruser" Cory Kruseman of Ventura, Yorba Linda's "Cadillac" Cody Williams, "Dynamite" David Cardey of Riverside, Yorba Linda's Matt Mitchell, Seth Wilson of Las Vegas, Concord's "The Demon" Damion Gardner, and many more.

Canyon Speedway Park is located at 9777 West Carefree Highway in Peoria, Arizona. To get to the track, take Lake Pleasant Parkway, then 1.3 miles West on Carefree Highway.
