Kerry Madsen – Off and Running with the WoO!
(Bill W) February 20, 2013 – Things got started on the World of Outlaws trail for the Keneric Racing #29 team last weekend at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida. Rain hindered some of the preparation the team was hoping for when two nights of All Stars were washed from the schedule. Still, results improved each night at Volusia, and after Kerry heads to Australia for two weeks of racing, the team will be ready in Las Vegas.
Volusia always has one of the toughest fields of the year, and Kerry got behind the 8-ball with a late qualifying number that saw him 28th quick in Friday's opener. "We didn't qualify well, obviously," he says. "Usually, when you get a bad qualifying number, you can make something out of it. That was a night you just couldn't do that. You couldn't bury yourself that way."
After starting seventh and running seventh in his heat, he was buried in the B as well. He would take a provisional, driving from 25th to 16th. "The track was heavy, and we had to run the B," says Kerry. "We just couldn't make it forward. There wasn't much passing. So we had to take a provisional. There was a bit of an advance, but nothing special."
Saturday started the way Friday did…28th quick. This time, the team was able to make the car click and Kerry charged forward to win the B, and from 21st to 13th in a stout feature field. "We qualified poorly again on Saturday," he relates. "We really worked on the racecar and it was strong. We were able to win the B from seventh. I thought we had a great car in the feature. We were able to come from the back up to 13th."
In Sunday's finale, eyes were again on the St. Mary's, New South Wales native. After registering the 22nd quick time of the night and getting through his heat, he would charge from 22nd to 8th in the main event. "The car was good again, we just couldn't get qualified for some reason," says Kerry. "We moved forward all night, and we were able to grab a top ten from the back (22nd)."
Kerry hopes the steady progression over the three nights is a harbinger of good things to come for the Keneric Racing team when they head west in two weeks time with the Outlaws. "We had some loftier goals for the weekend, but we were able to get a good baseline. The reality is I think we are heading in the direction that is needed as we go west."
