2013 USAC WEST COAST SPRINT CAR PREVIEW & SCHEDULE
by Lance Jennings

SANTA MARIA, CA – DECEMBER 19, 2012... USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series Promoter Chris Kearns has announced the schedule for the 2013 campaign. The Central California based group is poised for twenty-seven nights of action, starting with the "2nd Annual Winter Challenge" and closing with the "46th Western World Championships" at Canyon Speedway Park. In addition to returning to the clay ovals of Las Vegas, Tulare, Bakersfield, Hanford, and Santa Maria, the series will make their debut at Perris Auto Speedway during the prestigious "18th Annual Oval Nationals."

The popular three race "Grudge Series" has returned with the newly formed USAC Southwest Series. The "Sin City Showdown" at Las Vegas, Canyon Speedway Park's "Brawl For It All," and the opening night of the "Oval Nationals" at Perris are non-point races that will feature $2500-to-win and $300-to-start main events. Last season, Ryan Bernal claimed the $5,000 mini-series championship and the point fund paid over $15,000 to racers that competed in every event. As this writing goes to press, officials with both the USAC West Coast and Southwest Series are looking for additional sponsorship to build an even larger point fund.

Kevin Montgomery's Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Arizona will host ten dates on the calendar. Starting on January 25th, the non-point "Winter Challenge" will feature six races in nine nights with the Arizona based group. The "Brawl for it All" on September 28th is the second night of the "Grudge Series" and the three night "Western World Championship" will close out the action packed season. Last September, Charles Davis Jr. won a tough 30-lap main event that was pivotal in winning his ASCS crown. For more information on the Canyon events and the "Winter Challenge" series, visit canyonspeedwaypark.com.

The March 7th "Sin City Showdown" at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will kickoff the "Grudge Series" with a special Thursday night program. Held during NASCAR weekend and showcased with the famed World of Outlaw Sprint Cars, the non-point event will feature drivers from California, Arizona, and New Mexico as they battle on the large 1/2-mile oval. Last March, Bud Kaeding served notice to the competition and began his championship run by winning the $2,500 jackpot. For more details on the Las Vegas race, visit lvms.com.

Steve Faria's Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare has four dates on the schedule. Opening the point season on March 15th with a special doubleheader, the lightning fast 1/3-mile will host two more nights of action in April. Last May, Kyle Larson won both nights of the Faria Memorial and claimed Saturday's finale from 20th in an unfamiliar JFM team car. For more information on the Tulare events, visit tularethunderbowl.com.

Starting on March 23rd, Scott Schweitzer's Bakersfield Speedway has three events on the schedule. The traditional 360s will also invade "The West’s Fastest 1/3-Mile High Banked Clay Oval" on April 27th and September 7th. Last March, Kaeding won the successful return to Oildale and continued his march to the championship. For more information on the Bakersfield shows, visit bakersfieldspeedway.com.

Scott Woodhouse's Kings Speedway in Hanford has six races on the calendar. Beginning on May 11th, the 3/8-mile facility will host the popular "Billet Cup" and special events like the "Jim Evett Memorial" on August 3rd and September 21st "Jim Turner Memorial." The "28th Annual Cotton Classic" on October 12th will close out the 15-race point season and the series champion will be crowned. Last season, Bernal and Kaeding scored two victories at Hanford, while Richard Vander Weerd won the August 4th feature. For more details on the Hanford events, visit kingsspeedway.net.

Ruben and Katy Munoz have taken over the promotions at Santa Maria Speedway and will host two dates on the schedule. The powerful 360s will battle at the 1/3-mile facility on June 15th and the "Doug Fort Memorial" on July 6th. Last season, Bernal won two main events on his way to his second track championship and Cory Kruseman won the "War at the Shore." Vander Weerd scored the "Billet Cup" victory and earned $5,000 after starting seventeenth. Currently, the new promoters are working on a website for track information.

On Thursday, October 31st, the USAC West Coast Sprints will make their debut at Don Kazarian's Perris Auto Speedway. Co-sanctioned with the Arizona based Southwest group, the finale of the "Grudge Series" will kickoff the "18th Annual Oval Nationals." With USAC/CRA and the USAC National Series in town, many talented drivers from across the country are expected to compete. For more information on the Perris date, visit perrisautospeedway.com.

Series officials have announced that the USAC Western Awards Banquet will be held on February 9th at the Woodland Auto Display in Paso Robles. In addition to the West Coast group, the USAC/CRA Sprints, Western Classic Sprints, Western Midgets, and Ignite Midgets will be honored. More details will be released as soon as possible. Mike Truex's Loudpedal Productions has DVDs available for purchase that feature the USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series. For more information, call (805) 407-7229 or visit www.loudpedalvideo.com.
