Shane Stewart Shines During AU Opener
PETERSEN MEDIA- Saturday night in Sydney, Australia, Shane
Stewart continued his winning ways as he returned to the land down
under, and dominated the Skidz For Kidz 30 lap feature at the Sydney
Speedway.
Stewart kicked the night off in quick fashion, as he timed in his
potent Monster Energy/Milwaukee/J&J No.7 machine second fastest
setting him up to start sixth in the second heat race.
With the track slicking off during his heat, Stewart was able to work
his Miracle Recreation Equipment/Lucas Oil Products/KRE powered machine
to the second spot, to transfer into the feature event where he would
roll out fifth on the grid.
The first two attempts at starting the race, saw two very aggressive
from the Indianapolis, IN native as he jumped into the second spot, only
to see the yellow flag waive both times.
The third start went off with no hitches, and Stewart again was able
to jump into second as he worked the bottom and chased after James
Thompson.
While running the bottom, Benny Atkinson showed Shane the top, as he
flew past him and took over the second spot knocking Stewart back to the
third spot on the fourth lap.
“I was glued to the bottom because there was moisture down there, but
Atkinson seemed to be making it work so I thought I would give it a
shot,” Stewart said.
A lap five caution put the Brown and Miller/Kaeding
Performance/Factory Kahne backed machine in the second row of a double
file restart, and he was able to shoot out into the second spot behind
Atkinson, only to drive around him on the highside for the lead on the
ensuing lap.
Out in front, Stewart was dominant as he paced the field on the high, scary side, and clicked off laps.
“Our car was awesome all night,” he continued. “We got out front and
made some good laps on a pretty slick track, and it was fun to drive.”
Over the middle 15 laps of the race, Stewart was masterful until
dealing with thick lapped traffic on the 21st circuit. Marred behind a
gaggle of cars, Stewart allowed Atkinson to close in and take the lead,
as he squirted by on the bottom on the 22nd lap.
On the 23rd lap, Stewart followed Atkinson, until open track allowed
him to drive back to the cushion and retake the lead, as the crowd rose
to their feet.
Stewart would go onto distance himself form Atkinson, and pick up a
very popular win in a tune up before the World Series Sprint Car series
kicks off next weekend.
“It’s awesome to get a win our first night out,” he explained. “Last
year we had some issues when we first got together, but towards the end
of the year we got going, and I’m glad it continued. I can’t thank Luch
Monte, his guys, and all of these amazing sponsors for their support.”
Shane and his Monte Motorsports team thank Monster Energy, Milwaukee,
Miracle Recreation Equipment, Lucas Oil Products, J&J Racing, KRE
Engines, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, Kaeding Performance, Factory
Kahne Shocks, Ogio, Etnies, GoPro, Alpine Stars, and Wrap My Ride.
