Fast cars, fireworks and Food Bank benefit all part of Placerville's July 4th Spectacular

By Bill Sullivan

PLACERVILLE,CA – One of the most family oriented nights of racing will take place at Placerville Speedway this Wednesday evening as three divisions of racing come together in a special weeknight event known as the annual "July Fourth Spectacular." The event will feature Sprint Cars, Pro Stocks and Pure Stocks in a full racing program that will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display presented by John Padjen Motorsports and the El Dorado County Fair Board.

Wednesday's event is routinely one of the most family oriented night's of racing at the El Dorado County Fairground track. Hundreds of families pack into the grandstands annually to enjoy the Independence Day holiday watching the what is now America's most popular spectator sports…auto racing.

While the holiday event is very special to families and children, it is also very meaningful to the many drivers in competition each year. To many drivers a victory on the Fourth of July has far more meaning that any other night of the year with due to the ecstatic sold out crowd that greets their heroes in grand fashion during victory lane celebrations just prior to the fireworks program.

"One of my biggest dreams has always been to win on the Fourth of July at this place," said Dan Brown Jr. of Nevada City, the current point leader in the Placerville Speedway Pro Stock division. "It's different than any other night. The track is always a bit tougher but this place is full of fans. I'm hoping I can win it this year."

For Brown, victory is nothing new this year at Placerville Speedway. The second generation driver in his sophomore season has won all but one event this year. With six feature wins to his name Brown holds a 37-point lead over former two-time track champion Mike Moran of Rancho Cordova.

Marek Bernert of Fair Oaks is the only other feature event winner this season and ranks third in the point standings while Dennis Armstrong of El Dorado sits fourth ahead of Placerville's Forryst Carnett who rounds out the top five. Following a wild night of racing last Saturday night, many drivers have been working late hours this week in an effort to make repairs in time for Wednesday's event. Last year's winner Dennis Ahart of Cameron Park is expected to be on hand with many others in this division.

In the sprint car division, Greg DeCaires of Elk Grove will lead the roster aboard his John Taylor Motorsports owned #35. DeCaires currently leads the standings over Placerville's Jimmy Trulli who is nine points out of the lead. C.J. Humphreys of Placerville sits in third place, 12-points out of the lead while James Sweeney of Placerville continues to move forward in the standings, moving up to fourth place this past week where he sits just 39-points out of the lead. Scott Russell of Placerville rounds out the top five.

In the Pure Stock division, Folsom's Matt Tilford leads the point standings by a mere point over Jason Englund of Citrus Heights. The pair of two time winners are trailed in the standings by Brian Stevens of Pollock Pines, Mike McClure of Nevada City and Rick Grunert of Woodland. Mount Aukum drier Danielle Clauson has advanced to sixth in the standings in this division.

Wednesday's event will not only celebrate Independence Day but will also benefit the El Dorado County Food Bank and the victims of the recent Angora Fire in South Lake Tahoe. Following time trials on Saturday night, selected drivers will be visiting the grandstands to collect donations for the local non-profit agency. Additionally, donation receptacles will be on site at both the speedway and the El Dorado County Fairgrounds "Family Blast" event as part of their "Christmas in July" Fundraiser.

The El Dorado County Food Bank provides food assistance on a daily basis in partnership with over 50 local emergency food response agency sites. Among the recipients are abused and abandoned children's homes, battered women's shelters, senior centers, local food pantries, soup kitchens, maternity homes and more including tragic events such as the recent fires in El Dorado County that left over 200 families without homes and belongings.

Placerville Speedway will open at 4:00 on Wednesday with Zam Fencing/Direct Traffic Control sponsored qualifying at 5:30 and heat races to follow. Adult tickets will be $14, juniors will be $10 and all children under 11 years of age will be admitted for free. For additional information on this event contact the track business office at 916-969-7484 or log on to www.johnpadjenmotorsports.com. The El Dorado County Fairground will be hosting many special events during the afternoon as well for separate admission.
