NIC FAAS SPRINTS TO PERRIS "FAIR RACE" VICTORY By Lance Jennings
PERRIS, CA – OCTOBER 8, 2012… Last Saturday night, Nic Faas of Huntington Beach took the lead from Rip Williams on lap eight and led the rest of the way to claim the Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car victory. For Faas, the $2,500 "Southern California Fair Race" win at Perris Auto Speedway marked his second triumph of the year as he was followed by point leader Mike Spencer, Cody Williams, David Bezio, and Austin Williams.
As starter Kevin Winters waved the green flag, "The Ripper" Rip Williams took the early command from the pole position. With Faas, "Dynamite" David Cardey, Richard Vander Weerd, and "Super" Rickie Gaunt settling into the top five, Williams looked for his first win of the season. Faas had other plans and began to challenge the Hall of Fame driver for the top spot. Executing an outside power move on lap eight, Nic grabbed the lead and quickly put some distance between himself and the field.
Fast Qualifier Mike Spencer was up to fifth from his eighth starting spot and looked for more. With Vander Weerd and Cardey racing in close quarters, Spencer slid into fourth as the leaders reached slower traffic. The action continued until a caution on lap seventeen for a stalled car halted the action. Faas had a great restart and with lapped cars in the mix, he opened up another lead.
Visiting Arizona driver Charles Davis Jr. had a scary moment on lap twenty-seven when his engine let go heading down the back straightaway. With large flames coming from his machine, the veteran driver slid to a stop near the turn three work area and climbed out. Emergency crews were quickly on the scene and Davis walked away uninjured. Several red flags would follow after hard racing and contact resulted in flips for "Showtime" Danny Sheridan, "The Kruser" Cory Kruseman, and Ryan Bernal. All three drivers walked away uninjured, but they were done for the night.
Faas was still out front with Spencer close behind and Williams in third. The leader had a great restart as Spencer and the field gave chase. Unfortunately, fuel problems would become an issue for several cars, including Williams and Cardey. As the remaining cars scrambled for position, the checkered flags waved and Faas took the 30-lap main event victory in front of the large crowd.
Piloting Mark Alexander's #4 Scott Sales Company / Competition Suspension Inc. Spike, Nic Faas won his sixth career USAC/CRA feature, tying Blake Miller and Levi Jones for tenth overall. The former Rookie of the Year qualified seventh out of the thirty-two cars in attendance and won the DJ Safety Heat Race #3. With fifteen top-10 finishes to his credit, Faas is second in points heading to Canyon Speedway Park on October 26th.
Temecula's Mike Spencer was going for his ninth win of the year and ran second in the "Southern California Fair Race." Driving Ron Chaffin's famed #50 Madera Produce / Grubstake Mini Storage Maxim, the 4-time champion earned his eleventh Sander Engineering / Rod End Supply Fast Time Award and placed third in his heat race. Spencer recorded his eighteenth top-10 finish on the season and holds a 332 point advantage heading to Canyon's "Hall of Fame Classic."
"The Cadillac" Cody Williams of Yorba Linda had his best finish at Perris with a third place run after starting fourteenth. The pilot of Jack Jory's #44 John Jory Corporation / AMA Plastics Spike qualified fourteenth, claimed second in his heat race, and earned the night's LRB Inc. Race Products Award. Williams sits eighth in the point chase with six top-10 finishes as USAC/CRA will battle the USAC National Series at Canyon.
El Cajon's David Bezio had his best night with USAC/CRA, scoring fourth in the "Southern California Fair Race" after starting tenth. Driving his #37X Inga Bezio Salon / Everhart Construction DRC, the 2011 Rookie of the Year was tenth quick, ran sixth in his heat race, and won the Competition Suspension Inc. / Diversified Machine Inc. Semi-Main. Bezio is currently twelfth in points with six top-10 finishes and four races remaining on the schedule.
Austin Williams of Yorba Linda took fifth at the checkered flags after starting thirteenth. Piloting Jack Jory's #2 John Jory Corporation / AMA Plastics Spike, the 2009 Rookie of the Year qualified thirteenth, claimed sixth in his heat race, and ran third in the semi-main. Williams has eleven top-10 finishes in 2012 and is sixth in the point chase going to the "Hall of Fame Classic."
Apple Valley's John Aden won his first heat race of 2012, taking the Extreme Mufflers sponsored event. Driving his #7A 777 Chassis / A Star Tire "House Car," the former Victorville track champion was twenty-fifth quick in time trials and scored fourteenth in the feature. As this writing goes to press, Aden is one of the early entries of the Perris Oval Nationals starting on November 2nd.
Greg Alexander of Gardena raced to victory in the Saldana Racing Products / Circle Track Performance Heat Race #2. Piloting Chuck Tyler's #72 Barnes Systems / Amsoil Maxim, Alexander was twenty-second quick on the night and twenty-second in the "Southern California Fair Race." Currently fifteenth in points, the young driver has two top-10 finishes on the season.
Hollister's Ryan Bernal won the SBI Fuel Systems / Integra Racing Shocks Heat Race #4 in Keith Ford's #73 King Racing Products / A&A Precision Machine Spike. Last year's USAC West Coast Rookie of the Year was fourth fast in qualifications and placed twelfth in the feature after a late flip. Bernal sits fourth in the standings with twelve top-10 finishes in the campaign.
J.J. Ercse of Lakewood earned the night's Ringers Gloves / Keizer Wheels "Hard Charger / Best Passing Job" honors with a sixth place run after starting eighteenth. Driving John Springstead's 360 powered #36 Webb Machinery / Frank's Fab Shop Jon Boy, the former USAC TQ Midget Champion qualified eighteenth, ran fifth in his heat race, and claimed sixth in the semi-main. Ercse has run a limited schedule with USAC/CRA and has two top-10 finishes on the year.
