URSS at Jetmore this Saturday, listen on RacinBoys Radio

Feast or famine. That's the way things have worked out for several drivers at the Great American Dirt Track at Jetmore Motorplex through the years. Just ask Lance Davis and Ty Williams. Both United Rebel Sprint Series drivers have won multiple times on the fast 3/8-mile dirt oval located south of Jetmore in Hodgeman County — a hotbed of sorts of sprint car racing. Davis won two in a row a year ago at the track before coming upon hard times the last time he was there this season. In late May, Davis was leading the feature when he came upon a stalled car, causing front-end damage that ended his stellar run.

“The car's been fast every night but once this year,” Davis said. “But either the car breaks or I screw up. … I'm pretty comfortable at Jetmore, though.”

Davis hopes his string of rough outings turns around Saturday at the Great American 305 Nationals. The night features an elevated purse of $2,000 to the winner, along with $200 for starting the A-main. It also will be a double points night for URSS drivers, and all URSS rules will apply. Davis was leading the second day of the Steve King Memorial in late May before coming upon a spun lap car. Lap cars in front of him obscured his vision, and he had no time to respond. He watched the rest of the race from the pits, being credited with a 19th-place finish. All that after he led every lap in his heat race that night.

“Last year we got two in a row there,” Davis said. “This year's been frustrating as hell. Here we go with the would have, should have, could haves. If we would have got that win, we would have won three of the last five there. That would be a pretty good statistic.”

Williams feels Davis' pain. He's won multiple times at the track as well, but he's also suffered some rough outings, too. “It's one of the tracks I have quite a bit of confidence in,” said Williams, the 2010 URSS national champ. “There and Hays, we feel we could go and win every night.” That's just what Williams is hoping for Saturday. He's won three times this year, once at Jetmore on the first night of the Steve King Memorial, then won both races in Hays during the Wheatshocker Rebel Nationals.

“We've had some pretty good success at Jetmore,” Williams said. “I think we'll have one of the better car counts. Jetmore always seems to get quite a few cars.” That, along with the extra money being paid out, could have many drivers going all out for the win.

“I'm looking forward to it,” Davis said. “It's a bigger race and bigger money. We know we can run with anyone there.”
