SPENCER ROLLS TO WATSONVILLE VICTORY
By Lance Jennings

WATSONVILLE, CA – AUGUST 13, 2012… Last Friday night, Amsoil USAC/CRA point leader Mike Spencer inherited the lead during a lap fifteen yellow flag and cruised to victory at Watsonville's Ocean Speedway. Co-sanctioned with the USAC Western Classic Series, the triumph marked the seventh win of the year for the 4-time champion and he pocketed $2,500 for his efforts. Terry Schank, Brody Roa, Billy Aton, and Austin Williams followed Spencer across the line.

Driving Ron Chaffin's famed #50 Madera Produce / Grubstake Mini Storage Maxim, the Temecula driver qualified fourth quick on the night and ran third in his heat race. Starting sixth in the main event, Spencer steadily made his way forward as Schank, Roa, and Ryan Bernal waged a furious battle for the lead. Once in command of the main event, Spencer ran away from the field to claim his thirty-first career USAC/CRA victory.

Santa Rosa's Terry Schank ran second in his first start of the year with USAC/CRA. Piloting Roger Gleason's #1X Hunt Magnetos / King Racing Products Spike, the Wingless Spec Sprint star led the opening lap before falling to Roa and Bernal. Schank was able to keep the two leaders in his sights, but could not keep pace with Spencer to the checkered flags. Now driving an injected 360-powered machine, Terry qualified thirteenth and placed fourth in his heat race.

Brody Roa of Buena Park had another solid performance and briefly led the 30-lap main event. Driving the BR Performance #91R HD Industries / Burris Racing Spike, the night's LRB Inc. Race Products Award winner qualified fourteenth and won the Saldana Racing Products / Circle Track Performance Heat Race #2. The former Wagsdash champion is currently fourth in points.

Benicia's "Wild" Billy Aton earned the night's Ringers Gloves / Keizer Wheels "Hard Charger / Best Passing Job" honors with a fourth place run after starting fifteenth. Piloting the family owned #26 Red Line Oil / All Flow Mufflers Triple X, the Wingless Spec Sprint standout was fifteenth quick, seventh in his heat race, and seventh in the semi-main.

Austin Williams of Yorba Linda scored fifth at the checkered flags after starting eighth. Driving Jack Jory's #2 John Jory Corporation / AMA Plastics Spike, Williams was one of four cars under the old track record. Qualifying second overall, the hard charger ran fourth in his heat race and is third in the point chase.

Yorba Linda's "Cadillac" Cody Williams set a new track record in Sander Engineering / Rod End Supply Time Trials and won the Competition Suspension Inc. / Diversified Machine Inc. Semi-Main. Piloting Jack Jory's #44 John Jory Corporation / AMA Plastics Spike, Williams ran fifth in his heat race and scored eighteenth in the feature after flipping his machine. Cody walked away uninjured and left Ocean Speedway ninth in USAC/CRA championship points.

Ventura's "The Kruser" Cory Kruseman won his third heat race of the year behind the wheel of Mark Priestley's #7 Roy Miller Freight Lines / Sander Engineering Bullet. The 2006 Champion qualified sixteenth on the night, won the Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1, and scored twenty-first after suffering front end damage. Despite missing a few races, Kruseman is running eighth in the point standings.

Tony Hunt of Lincoln won the 10-lap DJ Safety Heat Race #3. Piloting Mike Phulps' #56 Metal Works / Ebay Motors Maxim, the multi-time Western USAC Champion was eighteenth fast in time trials and ran ninth in the feature after starting eighteenth. Hunt left Watsonville second in the Western Classic point chase.
