AUSTIN WILLIAMS STRIKES AGAIN AT SANTA MARIA By Lance Jennings
SANTA MARIA, CA – JUNE 16, 2012… After a Nic Faas miscue, Austin Williams surged past Danny Sheridan to take command on the second lap. From there, the Yorba Linda driver sailed the rest of the way to score the win at Chris Kearns' Santa Maria Speedway. The $2500 victory marked Williams' second career Amsoil USAC/CRA Sprint Car feature at the 1/3-mile facility and his first triumph with the USAC Western Classic Racing Series.
After running sixth quick in time trials and finishing second in his heat race, the driver of Jack Jory's #2 John Jory Corporation / AMA Plastics Spike started fourth in the 30-lap feature. Running third after the completion of the first lap, Williams powered by Faas and Sheridan to take command on the back straightaway. The son of Hall of Fame driver Rip Williams steadily increased his advantage and continued to hit his marks on the Santa Maria clay oval. After a yellow flag on lap fifteen bunched the field, Austin had a great restart and claimed the 30-lap main event win. Sheridan scored second, followed by Spencer, Faas, and Shane Golobic. With the victory, Williams has climbed to third in the USAC/CRA point standings.
Starting second in the main event, Santa Maria's "Showtime" Danny Sheridan saw his shot at the lead foiled by Williams. The pilot of the Kittle Motorsports' #18 Pace Lighting / PJ1 Lubricants Sherman chased after the leader and fought off Faas and Spencer at the same time. The program's tenth fast qualifier held on to finish second at the checkered flag in front of his hometown fans. Earlier in the night, Sheridan took third in his heat race and is currently fifteenth in the point chase.
Mike Spencer of Temecula took third from Faas in the late stages of the main event to earn the LRB Inc. Race Products Award for his performance. Driving Ron Chaffin's #50 Madera Produce / Grubstake Mini Storage Maxim, the 4-time series champion was seventh quick on the night and placed second in his heat race. As this writing goes to press, Spencer holds a sixty-five point lead over the competition.
Huntington Beach's Nic Faas claimed fourth in the Santa Maria feature. Briefly leading in Mark Alexander's #4 Scott Sales Company / Competition Suspension Inc. Spike, the ninth fast qualifier held third until a late pass by Spencer. The former USAC Western Midget Series Champion was fourth in his heat race and is currently second in the point chase heading to Perris on July 4th.
Shane Golobic of Fremont placed fifth in the Santa Maria 30-lap main event. Piloting Keith Ford's #73X King Racing Products / A&A Precision Machine Ellis, Golobic qualified fifth quick on the night and ran fourth in his heat race. The versatile Northern California driver looked comfortable in his USAC/CRA rides and will return when his busy schedule allows.
Driving the team car to Golobic, Hollister's Ryan Bernal earned the night's Ringers Gloves / Keizer Wheels "Hard Charger / Best Passing Job" Award with a fifteenth to sixth place run. Racing Keith Ford's #73 King Racing Products / A&A Precision Machine Spike, the Santa Maria track champion qualified fifteenth and won the DJ Safety Heat Race #3. Ryan has moved to fifth in the championship points as the series returns to action on July 4th.
Richard Vander Weerd of Visalia earned his third career Sander Engineering / Rod End Supply Fast Time Award over the twenty-four cars in attendance. Driving Ron Vander Weerd's #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Mid Valley Pipe & Supply Maxim, last year's USAC West Coast Sprint Champion scored fourth in his heat race. Vander Weerd was running in the top ten until pulling off in the late stages of the feature. Officially scoring nineteenth, Richard is currently eleventh in the standings.
Buena Park's Brody Roa won the 10-lap Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1. Piloting the BR Performance #91R HD Industries / Burris Racing Spike, Roa was sixteenth in time trials and eleventh in the main event. The Yuma, Arizona feature winner is sixth in points as the series returns to Perris for the "Firecracker 30."
"Cadillac" Cody Williams of Yorba Linda won the Saldana Racing Products / Circle Track Performance Heat Race #2. Driving Jack Jory's #44 John Jory Corporation / AMA Plastics Spike, Williams was seventeenth in qualifications and twelfth in the main event. When the series returns to Perris Auto Speedway, Cody sits tenth in the point chase.
