BUD KAEDING SAILS TO 30-LAP HANFORD VICTORY By Lance Jennings
HANFORD, CA - JUNE 10, 2012... Starting on the outside of the front row, Campbell's Bud Kaeding led all 30-laps to score his third USAC West Coast 360 victory of the year. With the $1,500 triumph at Hanford's Kings Speedway, Kaeding becomes the all-time series leader with nine features and continues to lead the points heading to Santa Maria on July 23rd.
With a four pill drawn for the main event inversion, Matt Mitchell and Kaeding shared the front row. As the nineteen car feature rolled to the starter's green flag, Kaeding took the early command. Mitchell had secured second, followed by Cory Kruseman, Richard Vander Weerd, Danny Faria Jr., and Markus Niemela.
As the race progressed, the racing surface changed and several yellow flags would slow the action. On each occasion, Kaeding had brilliant restarts and navigated through slower traffic at will. Mitchell kept pace with the leader for many laps, but Kaeding eventually shook free to maintain the top spot. With the checkered flag waving, it was all Bud Kaeding on this night. Matt Mitchell was second until a last corner pass by Richard Vander Weerd wrestled away the position. Mitchell would have to settle for third at the finish line, followed by Cory Kruseman and Danny Sheridan, who scored fifth after starting thirteenth.
Piloting Junior Bowman's #29 Buster & Ziggy Enterprises / Kaeding Performance Bullet, Bud Kaeding was third quick in time trials and second in his heat race. It was a great night for the 3-time USAC Silver Crown Champion as he also won the companion winged 360 Rebel Cup main event. To date, Kaeding has finished no worse than fifth in seven races and holds a fifty-nine point lead over the competition.
After his last corner pass on Mitchell to secure second, Visalia's Richard Vander Weerd has his best finish of the year. Driving Ron Vander Weerd's #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Battery Worx Maxim, Richard was second fast on the night and won the Saldana Racing Products / Keizer Wheels Heat Race #2. Last year's series champion is third in the point chase and has three top-finishes on the year.
Yorba Linda's Matt Mitchell scored third and earned the night's LRB Inc. Race Products Award. Piloting Steve Watt's #18 Christian Stover Foundation / SWE Maxim, Mitchell qualified fifth and placed second in his heat race. The former USAC Western Midget Series Rookie of the Year is currently second in the championship points with four top-5 finishes to his credit.
"The Kruser" Cory Kruseman of Ventura made his first start of the year and claimed fourth in the main event. Piloting Keith Ford's #72 King Racing Products / A&A Precision Machine Spike, Kruseman was seventh quick in time trials and second in his heat race. The former SCRA & USAC/CRA Champion is twenty-fifth in the points as the series prepares for the annual Bud Stanfield Memorial.
Santa Maria's "Showtime" Danny Sheridan earned the night's Kaeding Performance / Ringers Gloves "Hard Charger / Best Passing Job" honors with a fifth place run after starting thirteenth. Driving Warren Dorathy's #21 WD Racing / Pace Lighting KPC, Sheridan qualified fourth and ran fifth in his heat race. Last year's Bud Stanfield Memorial winner is currently eighth in the standings and has three top-5 finishes on the year.
Ryan Bernal of Hollister earned his first Sander Engineering / Rod End Supply Fast Time Award of the year. Piloting Keith Ford's #73 King Racing Products / A&A Precision Machine Spike, Bernal won the Extreme Mufflers Heat Race #1 and rebounded to take eighth in the feature after an early tangle. The defending Santa Maria track champion is sixth in points and has four top-5 performances to date.
Tipton's "Hollywood" Danny Faria Jr. won the 10-lap DJ Safety Heat Race #3. Driving his #17V Johnston Calf Pens / Buster & Ziggy Enterprises Bullet, Faria qualified ninth and raced to tenth after restarting at the back. The recent USAC/CRA feature winner earned the night's Weld Racing Award and has climbed to fourth in the standings. As the writing goes to press, "Hollywood" has two top-5 finishes on the season.
