Brady Bacon – Hut Hundred Winner!
(Bill W) June 4, 2012 – Brady Bacon has been on a roll! In the last few weeks, he picked up his first ever win at Kokomo Speedway, won in the Jesse Hockett Racing #77, took another Steve King Memorial, and now he has put his name on the prestigious list of Hut Hundred midget winners. Driving the Wilke-Pak #11w, he only needed to lead the 99th and 100th lap to take the famous event at the Tri-State Speedway near Haubstadt, Indiana on Saturday.
Last year at the Hut Hundred was tough, not only for Brady, but especially for the Wilke-Pak team. "There was nowhere go but up after last year," he says. "Last year, Kody Swanson destroyed one of the Wilke cars and was life-flighted out. I didn't finish. This was definitely 180 degrees from that. This was the Wilke's fourth Hut Hundred."
With a format calling for a three-wide start, the cars are lined straight-up by time. Brady clocked in second quick. "The track was really, really tricky in qualifying," he says. "It had
a big cushion. I actually left a lot on the table out there, because I messed up. But I think everyone did. If you hit the cushion hard, it really sucked you in. There were even a couple of flips. Our lap was decent. It was important to have a good starting spot in the feature."
Starting up front avoids any problems on the start. "Starting three-wide with that many cars, you want to stay out of the pack," says Brady. "It makes it easier if you are up front like we were. It can get a little crazy three-wide at Haubstadt with that many cars. It's not very roomy. It's easy to get caught up in something."
One hundred laps is the distance. Did it require patience on the part of the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver? "You have to be a little patient, but Jerry (Coons Jr.) and I pretty much raced for 100 laps," he says. "Cautions count for the first 50 laps, but we were racing hard the whole time. We got to lapped traffic pretty quick, so that presented some challenges. We had to stay 'elbows up' the whole time."
The pair set a blistering pace, eventually leaving the rest of the field running for third. "We had a red flag for rain at one point late," says Brady. "We were setting a good pace. There were eight or nine cars between third place and me. Jerry and I had definitely separated ourselves."
The battle came down to the end, but Coons broke a part in the suspension with two to go. "Unfortunately, Jerry broke there at the end," says Brady. "I think we were going to have something for him. We were right there with him. We had gotten beside him once. We had time to make one more run, but unfortunately, he broke. It was going to be one good show."
As far as the importance of the win, Brady puts it at the top. "I've won races that pay more, but this is totally the most prestigious race that I've won," he says. "It's definitely the biggest race I've won as far as that goes."
