Alex Johnson (2-21-12) – The UNOH Dirt Car Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park kicked off the 2012 Sprint Car season for Dustin Morgan and the M&M Motorsports 2. “I have never raced down here in February and really looked forward to kicking off the season down here."

Wednesday night would kick off what would be a five-race stand for the M&M Motorsports 2. The first two nights saw Dustin race with the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions. A total of 40 cars would check into the pits, with Dustin timing in 36th quick and finishing 14th in the B. The second night with the All Star’s would almost produce identically results as Dustin again timed in 36th and would finish 18th in the B.

The third night would see much better results, with Jimmy Jones returning as crew chief after a successful year with him towards the end of the 2011 season, Dustin was looking forward to improving at one of the fastest half miles in the US. “The car felt pretty good the first two nights, but we were just down on power a little bit and that’s all it takes from being 15th fastest to 36th fastest, so Jimmy and myself put in a Don Ott for the Outlaw’s opener and I had a good feeling about the next day.”

With the first of three nights getting rained out, Dustin and the M&M Motorsports 2 would come back Saturday night for the Season opener as the Friday night show would be made up Sunday afternoon. After qualifying 15th quick, Dustin went out to win his first Outlaw heat race and locked himself in the feature event. With a 6 pill drawn for the dash, Dustin started 9th and finished 10th, which would be his starting spot for the 30 lap World of Outlaws season opener. “Just being about to run with these guys at a completive level was a huge confidence booster, I don’t have near as much seat time on these big tracks with a 410 then these guys do and to be able to make the dash in just my 3rd time on the track, I was pretty happy,” an excited Morgan said about the evening.

Within a few laps of running in the top 10, Dustin came to a stop with a broken tear off clip on his visor. Resulting in a 25th place finish. “It was definitely a disappointment, Jimmy had the car perfect and the motor was hitting as hard as ever, just a bad luck deal and I couldn’t see.”

Sunday would be a long day, as the World of Outlaws would run two complete shows. “Day shows are never fun, it always seems to be a tire eater but it was good to get some more laps on a half mile with a winged 410 as it is something I really haven’t don’t much of in my career.” .07 seconds was the difference between starting on the pole of his heat race to starting 5th. . However that didn’t matter, as Dustin would end up starting 3rd due to Jac Haudenschild who would cause a yellow before a lap would be complete. “I missed the rubber a little bit and got shuffled back at the start, so I tried some different lines and ending up getting around a couple guys and finished 4th.”

With momentum building as Dustin made the first two Outlaw features, the day race was a learning curve. “We ended up going a lap down pretty early in the race so I just decided to pull in and save four tires and wear on the motor.” Once again it was a disappointing 25th place finish.

Sunday’s second complete show was similar to the first two nights, as Dustin timed in 25th quick, finished 7th in his heat and would have to race the B. After battling hard with Fred Rahmer for the final transfer spot the two would tangle together coming out of turn two and end their nights. “I learned a lot this week racing with some of the best winged 410 drivers out there, the car kept getting better each time we hit the track and I am really looking forward to how the rest of the year will be,” Morgan said about his first trip to the state of Florida.

Next will see Full Blown Chaos change motors and put in their Wesmar 360 in this week, as Dustin will make his first trip to the East Bay Raceway Park for the 11th annual Ronald Laney Memorial King of 360 Race. “ I am really looking forward to racing at East Bay, our Wesmar 360 was bad fast last year and Jimmy and myself are working great together,” an excited Morgan said.
