| Allard One Spot Away From Defending Title |
PETERSEN MEDIA: The Trophy Cup is one of those events where it’s
more important to accumulate points, and not necessarily win the race.
Jonathan Allard was two laps away from backing up his title, but wound
up second in points, and fourth in the race.
JA’s weekend got off to a picture perfect start as he led the way in
time trials, as he set quick time, over the 69 cars in the pit areas,
but tabulated the most points possible.
After moving to third in his heat race, JA was the high point man
heading into the Friday feature. With the top-12 point earners inverted
for the 30-lap feature, JA lined his Williams Motorsports entry up 12th.
The
Friday feature got off to a rough start, as a six-car pile up took
place in front of JA. He narrowly avoided disaster, but did still have
minor front end damage.
JA would fight his battered car, and score a 9th place finish, ending the night second in overall points.
Saturday night, Allard moved up two spots in his heat race, and was fifth in points heading into the 50-lap finale.
Early in the race, another wreck broke out in front of Allard while
he was running 15th, and this time, wing damage forced the No.0 pit side
for repairs .
The Ashley Smith led crew made the repairs, and JA found himself in the 20th spot with 44-laps to make a run.
As he would say after the event, JA had nothing to lose and put on a
show for the packed house as he worked his way through the field and
put himself back in contention to grab his second consecutive Trophy
Cup.
By the 27th lap, JA was back in the top ten, as he chased down Jac Haudenschild, and point leader, Brad Sweet.
JA would rip around the top of the speedway, as he got passed Sweet
and Haud as he worked his way into the top five, and got passed Shane
Golobic by the 43rd lap to assume to point lead, as he distanced himself
between the closest to him in points, “Haud” and Sweet.
The red flag flew on the 48th lap with JA sitting in the fourth
spot, with Haud right behind him with a two-lap shootout between the
duo, with the better finishes winning the title.
On the restart, Haud looked to get around JA out of four, and JA was unable to get back by.
Though he finished fourth in the race, JA would end up second in the final standings, ending his 2011 US racing season.
“My guys did a great job all weekend,” said JA. “They did an awesome
job making repairs to this thing, and getting us back out there, and I
had nothing to lose after we went to the back, and did what I could to
get us back in contention. We were right there at the end, just got beat
with two laps to go. I have to thank all these guys, Morrie, and Katie
Williams, and all our sponsors for a great 2011.”
ON TAP: Allard now heads overseas as he will head to New Zealand for
more racing action through the US winter. Stay tuned for more
