NWWT sprint cars return to Grays Harbor this Saturday
VANCOUVER, Wash. - The Northwest Wingless Tour sprint car series will return to action this Saturday with its second stop of the season at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash.
Corey Esteban of Gaston, Ore. currently leads in the point standings, holding a six-point advantage over Creswell, Ore.'s Jesse Thistle. Esteban and Thistle are two of just three drivers who have finished in the Top 10 in every NWWT main event so far this season. Esteban had a larger lead going into the June 4th event at Coos Bay Speedway following his impressive runner-up finish the night before at Willamette Speedway, but a driveline problem while running second at Coos Bay resulted in a ninth place finish and saw the point standings tighten up overall, as fifth place Theo McCarty is only 23 tallies back now.
A red hot Steve Vague of Kirkland, Wash. is expected to be in attendance on Saturday, having won both NWWT events this month down in Oregon. Vague became just the second driver in the NWWT's short history to win consecutive main events and is looking to possibly become the first to win three in a row. After winning at Willamette Speedway on June 3rd, Vague swept the entire program the next night at Coos Bay.
With a strong performance at Coos Bay, Kyle Mehner of Damascus, Ore. moved into the third position in the point standings, just two tallies ahead of Vancouver, Wash.'s Mike Romig. Romig, while fourth in points, is only 16 points back of Esteban.
Brad Rhodes of Aloha, Ore. currently leads the NWWT Rookie of the Year chase.
As stated before, the NWWT is experimenting with a throw-out rule in 2011. After the June 25th event at Sunset Speedway, the point standings will begin to reflect everyone's lowest event point scores being thrown out.
Hobby stocks and hornets will also be on the card alongside the NWWT. A special promotion is being run by Grays Harbor Raceway on Saturday. Fans who bring two cans of food will get $3 off Adult, Senior and Military tickets. All collected donations will go to the City of Elma Food Bank.
