Mar 28 - FAIRGROUNDS IN JEOPARDY
Many of you are like me and have attended the functions at the
fairgrounds for years, and therefore, you may know that a resident
named Max Kelly has headed up a "coalition" against the fair
grounds and it's current hosting of a number of traditional events.
These are revenue generating events that help the fairgrounds
maintain its existence and cover basic operating costs. Mr. Kelly's
argument is that these events are a bother to the surrounding
neighbors and should be stopped. Briefly, Mr. Kelly apparently
purchased a historical or classic Victorian house and then had it
moved to a location behind the fairgrounds about 5 years ago. He
has since begun to complain about the “nuisance” some of the
events held at the Fairgrounds. He recently obtained the counsel
of attorney Gary Patton and is threatening to sue the fairgrounds
for a variety of reasons, including environmental concerns.
In late February, Governor Brown announced (supported by both
the house and senate) that effective immediately, all state funding
that previously went to District Agricultural Associations
(commonly referred to as county fairgrounds) is to cease and each
fairground is to become self sufficient. This places 29 fairgrounds
statewide, in a position of likely closing their doors and no longer
hosting events for the communities they serve. Two of these
fairgrounds include our neighbors, Monterey and San Benito.
This means that for our fairgrounds here in Santa Cruz County, all
events that take place on the property will be the only source of
revenue, and means of keeping the lights on, having running water,
paying a few staff members, and providing necessary upkeep to the
facilities. Therefore, it is my opinion that Mr. Kelly's suit jeopardizes
the very existence of our fairgrounds, a critically important venue for
our community events. Fairgrounds events are designed, managed
and hosted by members of our community in an effort to provide
entertainment as well as a source of income to maintain of the Santa
Cruz County Fairgrounds.
If you wish to support the fairgrounds you may provide a letter to
the board. Letters may be sent using any of these options:

Gary Patton is a dangerous person. He lorded over the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors for years. As the powerful chairman he single-handedly stopped all development in the county for over a decade. He can shut the racing down w/ a lawsuit. The fair board has no resources to fight him off.

This happened in Grass Valley. A guy moved into town, some 5 miles from the track, then started
complaining about dust and noise. It went on & on for for a long time then when a decision WAS made, he guy had moved out of town again!

Look at the bright side. At least we have a spot where a track that I grew up at is used as a horse arena once a year!

I wrote my letter, here it is:
Dear Mr. Bethke,
It has come to my attention that the future of dirt track racing at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds may be in jeopardy. My family and I live in Sunnyvale, CA. Each year we make countless trips to Watsonville to attend events held at Ocean Speedway. While visiting the fairgrounds we often patronize local businesses such as restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores and hotels.
Ocean Speedway also represents an important part of the history and purpose of the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. County fairgrounds are designed as meeting places where residents of the surrounding communities can come together to enjoy outdoor sporting events and other forms of large scale group entertainment. Dirt track racing at the county fairgrounds has existed for almost as long as cars have been used for transportation. It would be tragic to see the complaints of a few vocal neighbors destroying this part of the current and historic community purpose served by Ocean Speedway and the events they offer at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds.

As we all know the importance of keeping our County Fair Grounds open for the reason of entertainment and county income to all businesses. As a Motorsports owner/ Driver and fan, we all choose to spend our hard earned money in the town of Watsonville and around the County of Santa Cruz. All the race fans. sponsors, Marketing partners, business owners that support our motorsports team enjoys spending time and there hard earn money in the Santa Cruz County during the many events that are held at the county fairground. We feel that turning away any and all motorsports events that are held at Santa Cruz County Fair Grounds will defiantly impact all small and large business in the area. I know Steve Osborne Motorsports Marking Group (S.O.M.) ( www.getsom.Net) spends plenty of money in around the fairgrounds each and every weekend through out the years. We also bring marketing Partners to each event and wine and dine them in the county, which we all know is not cheap, but very rewarding to all that enjoy the coast. Steve Osborne Motorsports Marketing Group feels that any interuption and/or closing of Santa Cruz County Fair Ground would be a huge mistake and hard blow to the businesses in the area. Every afford should be put in place to avoid the possible closure and/or the events at the Santa Cruz County Fair Grounds. Steven Osborne Steve Osborne Motorsports Marketing Group

Case study:
Mark Rivard and his crackerbox house he built next to Altamont Raceway Park.
The very dark and quiet Altamont Raceway Park.
