I have never been to Merced or Calistoga so can someone tell me where the best place to sit to watch the races , thank-you very much.

Never been to Merced, but @ Stoga, sit in the main grandstand, close to the flag-stand or turn one, and as high up as you can, so you can see the back straight. Been there many times. Turn 4 is good for being close to the action as well, but its hard to see if you're down too low.

This is the view from the top row of the main grand stand. Being in the infield near turn #1 is also quite an experience.
