Brandon Davis charges to first career winged sprint car victory Saturday night at Petaluma Speedway
By Gary Thomas
Petaluma, CA – August 17, 2009…After winning his third wingless feature of the season the previous weekend Rohnert Park, CA's Brandon Davis came back this past Saturday and put together a dominating drive in the main event at the Petaluma Speedway to claim his first career winged sprint car victory.
Davis, who began running wingless sprints in 2007 winning six times that season, made the jump to the winged 360 ranks last year and garnered the Petaluma Speedway Rookie of the Year Award, however, scored a best finish of second, making this most recent Saturday extra special to get into victory lane. "Man this feels awesome to finally get our first win in the winged car," the 19 year-old said. "We came close a couple times last year, but just couldn't get it done so it's pretty nice to get one under our belts."
A 19 car field was on hand Saturday at the Petaluma Speedway for what was the penultimate event in the battle for the track championship and Davis opened up the night by driving to victory in the second heat race aboard the Brandon Davis Racing, Hetrich Construction, S&S Automotive No. 19 sprinter. The pill draw for the main event then worked in his favor to give the Rohnert Park driver a front row starting spot and he would take full advantage of it charging into the lead early in the going.
A lightning fast surface was put together and saw the track record get broken in qualifying by Alissa Geving with a time of 12.378. By the main event the track remained very hooked-up and Davis charged away from the rest of the competitors as the Jay's Kustom Exhaust, Sparky's Collision Center machine was set-up to perfection for the track conditions. Although not an official record, at one point during the 25-lap feature the former Silver Dollar Speedway track champion actually bettered the track record set earlier in the night with a blistering 12.178 around the 3/8 mile clay oval.
Getting through traffic with perfection Davis kept the rest of the field at bay and charged off to cross under the checkered flag for his first winged sprint car win. "We had the car really fast all night long and had it set-up right where it needed to be," Davis said. "It was perfect for how the track was because I could maneuver around lapped traffic and put the car wherever I needed to. I was just trying to get through traffic as quick as possible because I figured those other guys would be coming and that's where you win or lose races."
Davis also competed at the Ocean Speedway on Friday night in the Dave Johnson owned wingless spec sprint where he brought home runner-up finishes in both his heat race and the main event. "It was our first trip to the track and have to thank Dave for letting me drive the car," Davis commented. "It was a solid weekend overall for us so we couldn't be happier and just hope to keep this momentum rolling."
