Wes Gutierrez Scores First Winged Sprint Car Win
By Gary Costa
Chowchilla, CA - (July 11, 2009) – Second-year Sprint Car pilot Wes Gutierrez scored his first Winged 360 Sprint Car win at Chowchilla Speedway Saturday night in Round No. 2 of Wright One Construction Sprint Car Series action.
Gutierrez and fellow drivers would be faced with challenging track conditions. But when the WG Motorsports pilot went out for his heat race, he was all business. When the green lights flashed on around the racetrack, he quickly noticed that he wasn't going to find anything on the bottom of the track, so he jumped to the top of the racetrack and in rim riding fashion, took the checkers in an exciting run after starting in the back.
The 20 lap feature event was up next, and Gutierrez would start on the outside of the front row. When the green flag dropped, Wes would lose a few positions as race leader Myles Bishop would start to distance himself from the rest of the field. Gutierrez would start his charge midway through the race, with him again going upstairs and eventually moving himself into the second spot. Race leader Bishop would have a front shock brake and Gutierrez would reel him in to take his first Winged Sprint Car win.
Camaraderie was shown by the future of the sport. When Wes pulled the WG Motorsports No. 007 into his pit after his victory lane interview, Ricky Wright, Jr., Myles Bishop, and Justin Sanders were the first to the WG Motorsports hauler congratulating their fellow comrade on his first Winged win.
It was also a proud moment for his parents Luis and Sher. Moments after his son pulled the car into the team's pit, proud father Luis was in the trailer text messaging and calling friends and family. Team manager Rod Styles was also beaming with pride.
"This feels great. Of course I wish there were more cars here, but that's not my fault. It feels good anytime that you win a race, whether it's 10 cars or 30 cars," the jubilant Gutierrez said. "I've lost a few this year due to me being a little overaggressive, but I'm learning, and I'm looking to win some more races before the year is over."
Wes Gutierrez will be back in action this Friday night at Ocean Speedway for the Civil War vs. GLR Investments 360 Sprint Car race.
